EPISODE 62: THE JINX
A cozy New Year catch-up turns into a chilling origin story as we launch part one of our three-part dive into Robert Durst, the billionaire heir known as “The Jinx.” We start where the pattern begins: a childhood punctured by a mother’s death, a father’s distance, and early signs of a fractured personality that prestige and money could hide but never heal. From Lehigh to UCLA, we track Durst’s double life—achiever on paper, drifter in spirit—and the formative friendship with writer Susan Berman, whose mob-adjacent roots and fierce loyalty become a crucial thread.
The center of gravity is Kathy McCormack Durst. We follow her from dental hygiene to medical school, her hopes for pediatrics, and the subtle shift from romance to surveillance. The penthouse view didn’t change the rules: timed family visits, social isolation, and a cycle of jealousy and violence that her friends and family only glimpsed in pieces. When Kathy sought divorce guidance, the financial screws tightened. Then came January 1982: a bruising fight, a quiet dinner party exit in sweats, a call that pulled her back, and a husband’s claim about a train ride that no one can cleanly corroborate. After that night, Kathy is gone.
We balance darkness with a dose of culture—rewatching favorites, sharing music from local bands Tragic and Defy the Tyrant—because life is layered even when the story isn’t. This opening chapter lays out the power dynamics, personal histories, and choices that lead to a missing person case that still grips true crime listeners and legal watchers. Next up, we’ll trace the fallout, the friends who stayed close, and the moments where reputation collided with reality. If this hooked you, follow the show, share it with a friend, and leave a review—your support helps us bring more deep, careful storytelling to your feed.

AS ALWAYS D-A-S
Hey Jesse! Hey Lindsay! Happy New Year, fam.
SPEAKER_07:Yes. Happy 2026. What? That made me feel old. The years just keep going by, you know?
SPEAKER_00:What is that um line from Smash Mouth? The years stop, the years start coming and they don't stop coming.
SPEAKER_07:Yeah, they keep on. And you gotta hit the ground running, yeah. All that.
SPEAKER_00:So what are you having to drink today?
SPEAKER_07:Heavenly Hill. I love it. The bourbon that you got me.
SPEAKER_00:If you didn't uh watch our last recap, um, or actually it was like when did we do that recap?
SPEAKER_07:About a month ago.
SPEAKER_00:No, it was like last week.
SPEAKER_07:Oh, felt like a month ago.
SPEAKER_00:Maybe it was a week and a half ago. Anyways, if you didn't uh watch or listen to that, so I got Jesse a couple of bourbons from the Bible for his um birthday and Christmas, and he's drinking Heavenly Hill. The bourbon Bible. And I'm having a double uh in my cup here, um, a double pineapple vista bay.
SPEAKER_07:On the bay.
SPEAKER_00:On the bay.
SPEAKER_07:Yeah, down by the bay.
SPEAKER_00:I'm thinking for 2026, I'm gonna switch to uh vodka soda vods with lime on the weekends. No way. I'm thinking what? Yes. No way. Yes. Well, these are starting, well, not starting to. They have, but off and on, they swell me, make me a little puffy. Yeah, you gotta mix it up.
SPEAKER_07:That's what I like doing, you know?
SPEAKER_00:So yeah, I think I'm gonna do that on the weekends.
SPEAKER_07:You should. I should try it for a little while, give it a little swing there. Yeah, because you have been on the bay, you've been down by the bay forever.
SPEAKER_00:Well, it's cheap, it tastes good, and uh it does not swell me like White Claw does. Whiteclaw really swells me, which I don't understand.
SPEAKER_07:Did you ever sing that song as a kid, Down by the Bay? Where'd Watermouth go?
SPEAKER_01:Back to my home.
SPEAKER_07:Yeah.
SPEAKER_01:Uh dare not be.
SPEAKER_07:Yeah.
SPEAKER_01:And if I do.
SPEAKER_07:You know the whole thing.
SPEAKER_01:My mother would say.
SPEAKER_07:Have you ever seen a llama wearing pajamas?
SPEAKER_01:Yeah. Down by the bay. Yeah.
SPEAKER_07:Dude, I haven't thought about that song. No, I I think my sister, like in some kind of back porch little conversation, came up with it one time. Yeah. All the old school stuff. Dude, that song's gotta be 100 years old. Probably.
SPEAKER_00:Well, let's get that intro going and then we'll uh we'll continue.
SPEAKER_07:We're gonna continue. We're gonna continue. Continuation. Uh it's 2026, everybody, and thank you guys for being a part of this Happy Friday down by the bay. It's okay. I feel like that's bumping. I like it. So, like, my car has pretty good speakers, and whenever I recap all this stuff and play it, like it's bumping in my car. That's why I keep saying that. I love it. It's like doom, chik, doom, chikka, doom, chikka, doom. I love it. I guess if you got good headphones, I mean it would bump too, right? If you're listening to the pod and you're juke into our music, it's a good juke, dude.
SPEAKER_00:So Jesse and I mutually discussed what we were going to talk about making us feel old today. But first, I have to Google this person's full name because I've done Forgot It since last night.
SPEAKER_07:Oh, yeah? The one that sang down by the bay?
SPEAKER_00:No.
SPEAKER_07:Where the water malls grow? No.
SPEAKER_00:No.
SPEAKER_07:Go ahead and uh go ahead and well, you had mentioned we were watching, because every every January we start Game of Thrones. And you had mentioned that it had been like seven years since the last episode.
SPEAKER_00:Okay, well, that was that's part one of what makes us feel old. So it's been seven years.
SPEAKER_07:That made me feel old.
SPEAKER_00:Since the last season of Game of Thrones. And we had already watched that show completely through about four times before that last season. And now we it is a family tradition to re-watch it every January, right after Christmas. And we just finished Stranger Things on New Year's. Oh god! But we talked about that in our recap also.
SPEAKER_07:Yeah, we did. But it was just like, okay, we're done with that on the Game of Thrones, and it was just the realization, and we don't want it to go away. And I like the spinoffs, and I love House of Dragons, and there's a new one.
SPEAKER_00:And there's a new one coming. Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, super excited for that. Yeah. New season of House of Dragon coming out this year. And uh, listeners, if you guys watch Euphoria, there is a new season of that coming out after like three years, maybe even four.
SPEAKER_07:So for all the uh binge watching people, there's so much to come up. I mean, I I think 2026 is gonna be amazing. I just can't wait for all that just to explode out. You know, we get to sit here and watch.
SPEAKER_00:Oh, and my son is telling me that we need to uh not forget that Shrek 5 is coming out this year.
SPEAKER_07:Oh, Sai, you got us. And now it's time to go away. Love you. Love you, love you, love you. Sai, we're finna get deep off in it, bro. Yes, bro.
SPEAKER_00:And um, so we were watching Adam's family from the 90s. That is right. Part one and two last night. And um We were talking about Gomez, right? So I was telling Jess, I was like talking, I was like, you know, I've never really seen Raul Julia in anything else after these movies, and he was so good. So, and Jesse was like, I think he put on some weight. So picture him with some weight and other things. And I'm like, no, I was like, I actually think that he passed away. So I went into a deep dive. This man passed away one year after the second Adams Family, which was Adams Family Values, yeah. And he was battling stomach cancer the whole time.
SPEAKER_07:What movie is it though? There's a movie where there's a guy who looks just like him. There's a few of them, and look, he looks just like him with the mustache and all, like I, but but bigger. I don't know why. We're gonna find that. I don't I don't know what you're talking about. I'll point it out if I see it.
SPEAKER_00:But um, so yeah, listeners, if you knew that already, you can call us dumb. It's okay. Um, but I was like, I for some reason that triggered. I was like, I actually think he passed away, and he did. Or this man.
SPEAKER_07:Am I just relating the new Gomez?
SPEAKER_00:Because he looks nothing like him.
SPEAKER_07:He does not. No, no, maybe not. Maybe I am.
SPEAKER_00:No, I'm not really a fan of um the Gomez and Morticia, even though it's Catherine Tetta Jones and I love her. And I love uh what's his name that plays? God, I can't think of his name either. He's in so many things that play in Wednesday. I'm not really, I mean, Raul, Julia, and Angelica Houston are my Gomez and Morticia. That's like that's our Gomez and Morticia. Even though Sean Aston from way back in the day, or John Aston, sorry. Not Sean Aston, but John Aston and um the woman that played Morticia, her name's off.
SPEAKER_07:Oh yeah.
SPEAKER_00:Anyways, from the from the black and white days.
SPEAKER_07:The old days. And Silas loves those. I love the OG too. I love black and white stuff.
SPEAKER_00:That's what made us feel old. Yes. Uh realizing that Raul Julia passed away in 1994.
SPEAKER_07:And him battling it during that movie. That's really pretty tough. Oh wow. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00:Well, uh Chadwick Bozeman did that as well. He battled cancer during the Avenger mu movies, and maybe we should do a pod on all that Black Panther.
SPEAKER_07:Struggling through, you know.
SPEAKER_00:And of course we can't stomach cancer is horrible.
SPEAKER_07:Yeah.
SPEAKER_00:I mean, it's all horrible. I mean, all cancer is horrible. We don't want to say that one is more horrible than the other. Right. But I have heard that stomach cancer is very aggressive and very painful.
SPEAKER_07:Yeah.
SPEAKER_00:As well as uh pancreatic cancer.
SPEAKER_07:And there's just been a lot of things happening in Hollywood during during the movies. You know, there's been people shot and stuff. So like there's been people that passed away in the middle of things, and things have happened. You know, people died on set. I mean, goodness. Yeah, absolutely. Brandon Lee. Brandon Lee, the crow too, yeah. Wow. But the Deftones was in that one. Not the. You can't say the. I said it once. It's just Deftones. It's just you know what though? When I were I was on Octane doing the um the liquid metal stuff with Jose, and I said the Deftones. And I feel bad about that. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00:Oh, yeah. So one day Jesse was driving to band practice and he got to be on um the trivia pits on liquid metal.
SPEAKER_07:And I said the deft tones.
SPEAKER_00:Oh god. They probably Jose probably wanted to punch you in the face. But we have had so many merry memories with that guy.
SPEAKER_07:Yeah.
SPEAKER_00:Over the last 10 years.
SPEAKER_07:Seven different occasions where we were like, hey, Jose, what's up? And he's hanging out. Like we have several selfies over time periods. And then I got to talk to him, and then you know, he was really, really amazing. I I almost won it. I almost won the trivia. That was really cool.
SPEAKER_00:He like sent me a video of him like talking on air. I was like, look at you.
SPEAKER_07:Anyone have XM, you can go back and check that out. That's cool. What day was it? October something. Right before Halloween. It was the trivia pit right before Halloween, I think. Anyhow.
SPEAKER_00:So are you ready?
SPEAKER_07:No.
SPEAKER_00:Okay.
SPEAKER_07:I'm not.
SPEAKER_00:So today, and for the next three weeks, we will be drinking about the jinx, which was a nickname for Robert Allen Durst.
SPEAKER_07:Wow. Is any akin to Fred?
SPEAKER_00:No.
SPEAKER_07:Oh.
SPEAKER_00:You have no idea how many people have said that and coverage about it.
SPEAKER_07:Well, let's just keep rolling, rolling, rolling, rolling.
SPEAKER_00:And he also went by Bob and Bobby. So I'm gonna call him Bob. So Bob was born on April 12th, 1943, in Manhattan and grew up in Scarsdale, which is about a 45-minute drive from the city. He was the oldest son of Seymour and Bernice Durst. Seymour was a real estate magnate, very rich, very powerful, and he owned a lot of shit.
SPEAKER_07:Was he like suddenly Seymour?
SPEAKER_00:No. Oh uh the Durst Organization, which is a development firm, is valued at$8.1 billion. Okay.
SPEAKER_07:You gotta hold your pinky up when you say that. Billion.
SPEAKER_00:Well, they can't see us on this one, so. Shabba Doopadu. Shabadoo. He had two younger brothers named Douglas and Tommy and a sister named Wendy. I don't know much about his upbringing, but it is reported that Bob was very close with his mother, Bernice, and Douglas was closer with Seymour. I don't know much, I don't know shit about Wendy, like at this point, right now, in my research. And um, Seymour was kind of a distant asshole to Robert, and it seemed that Seymour resented Bob and Bernice's relationship. So, according to Bob, when he was seven years old, his father woke him up and said, Mommy is out on the roof. Let's go say hi. So Bernice was out on the roof in her 90s. And Bob says that he waved at her. What? She had fallen to her death.
SPEAKER_07:Like, got up there and jumped to her death. Well, we still don't know. I don't know. Who gets on the roof though?
SPEAKER_00:I mean, we still don't know. Well, I mean, it's Manhattan. They had a rooftop penthouse type apartment. Yeah, mansion. Not an apartment, they had a mansion, yeah. Okay. So Bob doesn't remember anyone saying that she took her own life. Like most people were saying that she fell. So now Bob is still a very young child who has lost his mother. He's not really sure what happened. And he's at the funeral, and all the adults are telling him, Mommy's safe. This is where she will be, as they're lowering her coffin into the ground. It's very traumatic. He was eight years old.
SPEAKER_07:It's hard to grasp. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00:And he's like, wait, what? Mommy's in that box. Get her out. And proceeds to have an entire meltdown because he doesn't understand. And he tries to stop the lowering of the casket. Like he says that he tries to stop, like, you know, the guys that are holding the they're driving the thing and they're, you know, lowering it. Now, this is the 50s, and there's not a lot of proper mental health counseling available. And Seymour just would not talk about it after that. So, of course, Bob starts to act out. He runs away, and he just he becomes a nightmare. And he and Douglas start a very toxic sibling rivalry that really doesn't ever end. And in 1953, when he was when Bob was 10, our psychiatrist's report mentioned personality decomposition and possible schizophrenia.
SPEAKER_07:Yeah, he's shot out. I mean, he didn't come to grasp of what happened with his mother.
SPEAKER_00:Right. I'm so sorry. I am reading off of a laptop today, and it is different.
SPEAKER_07:You need more, you need some of this. You need some of this.
SPEAKER_00:I don't need none of that shit that tastes like leather.
SPEAKER_07:This is some I don't give a fuck in a glass, is what this is.
SPEAKER_00:And I'm also a little stuffy today. I apologize. I don't know if it's weather change. Like we went from we're in Florida. Most of our listeners know that. You hear it outside. We went from freezing till warm. Now it's raining. I'm like, I'm all messed up. In high school, he was described as a loner, quiet and shy. Uh, but he became a member of the camera club, the Spanish club, and he was on the JV soccer team. So it's like he was busy. He was trying to be a part of things, which a lot of sociopaths, uh, hit and hit, um, they try to do that. They try to fit in. Dexter.
SPEAKER_05:Yeah.
SPEAKER_00:Dexter couldn't fill shit, but he always tried to fill in. I mean, this that's a show, but you know.
SPEAKER_07:Yeah, but he was like this blank piece of paper standing out in the middle of whatever's happening.
SPEAKER_00:Speaking of Dexter, so I've I've watched a couple of TikToks where it's like the if you watch the show without his monologues and without his narrative, you wouldn't get it.
SPEAKER_07:You wouldn't get it. That would be like You know what though? They should do a retake of Dexter at least one season without any of that. Wouldn't that be fucked up? Nobody would watch it, but still, you'd be like, what the fuck is really going on here? We don't understand a damn thing.
SPEAKER_00:What isn't happening? Because he a lot of it's just him sitting there and staring, you know, just thinking it's weird.
SPEAKER_07:No, if they did the same thing with like so many different movies, right? That would be really fucking cool. That would be really cool. Like to take it.
SPEAKER_00:I love that style of show and or a movie where there's like internal monologues.
SPEAKER_07:Ferris Bueller style or whatever, you know. Like if you if they took the monologue out of that whole fucking movie.
SPEAKER_00:Well, Ferris Bueller is an internal monologue, like it's outward, it's external monologue because he's literally talking to the camera. Dexter's not.
SPEAKER_07:Yeah, well, it's internal monologue. Well, if they did the office that way, or or if they did like uh certain movies where it's just like there's this monologue that always happens. Well, the office is different. Yeah, I get that.
SPEAKER_00:The office is a mockumentary style. Yeah, just like Parks and Rec. Yeah.
SPEAKER_07:If they take away the little, the little the little side stories on so many things, we wouldn't even like it, I don't think. I don't know. Well, I mean, we'll probably never know. Hate to side rail on that one, but I had to, you know.
SPEAKER_00:So well, after high school, Bob attended Lehigh University and was on the lacrosse team and was the business manager of the student newspaper called The Brown and White. I'm guessing that's the school colors. I did not Google that. That's gotta be something like that. It's gotta be. Yeah. Um, and he earned a bachelor's degree in economics and then went on to enroll in a doctoral program at the University of California.
SPEAKER_07:So super intelligent, but at an intellectual way, like in the mix of other people. He was probably just like Dexter, right?
SPEAKER_00:Just kind of probably, just kind of like faking it until he making it. Yeah. Now, in between all of this, Robert had become what we would call a hippie. He was, uh it was the 60s. He was, he joined the anti-war movements, grew his hair out, grew a beard, you know, did the whole thing. Um, and this displeased Seymour. Uh, but Bob was like, I really don't care. I'm a rebel, okay? And when he attended UCLA, he met a woman named Susan Berman, who is a big part of this story. Now, Bob and Susan had an initial attraction to each other, but they never became a couple. Never. Instead, they became lifelong best friends. Remember that, okay? Put that. Okay.
SPEAKER_07:Put that in your in your little bank. Memory bank. Yeah. One wrinkle for you.
SPEAKER_00:Now, Susan had also come from wealth and had a difficult relationship with her father, but in a different way. Susan's dad was mob affiliated. Her father was David Berman, who was Jewish American. He had dominated illegal gambling in the in Depression era Minneapolis, and later took over the Flamingo Hotel and Casino on the Las Vegas strip. That was Susan's daddy. Daddy.
SPEAKER_07:He shook hands with Sinatra.
SPEAKER_00:Daddy, yes.
SPEAKER_07:Whoa.
SPEAKER_00:What was that from? Oh, Oceans. We were we watched, we watched all the Oceans movies the other day.
SPEAKER_07:I've kissed a ring before.
SPEAKER_00:Uh no, you were married to um, yeah. He was previously married to a Sicilian, correct?
SPEAKER_07:Yeah, I've kissed a ring before. And I I I can't I can't really sing it, but you know, I didn't like it, but I had to do it. I couldn't say I I kissed a ring and I liked it. Oh my god. No, but and that dude showed up to my house one time, and I was like, what the fuck? He's like, yeah, with Dionia from from uh wherever the fuck, Boston, and fucking came and fucking hung out, and I was like, What the fuck are you doing at my house, bro? I'm scared. You're so dumb. It happened.
SPEAKER_00:Well, in 1969, Bob withdrew from school and moved back east. So he was at UCLA, dropped out, and moved back home. Well, back east and opened a health food store that he would call All Good Things. Is that ringing any bells for you?
SPEAKER_07:All good things. No?
SPEAKER_00:Okay, we'll talk. Okay.
SPEAKER_07:I mean, we can eat later, but yeah.
SPEAKER_00:Yeah, well, I'm not gonna tell if if you don't remember it now, I'm not gonna tell you till way later. Okay. Okay, so this was in Middlebury, Vermont.
SPEAKER_07:You gotta think, you know, I stay in a hole, Lindsay.
SPEAKER_00:I know. Now, even though he's in his rebellion era, Daddy Seymour still funded all of this. Okay. Which, I mean, he actually liked that Bob was doing this because he was like, you know what, my boys, he's he's getting real estate. Maybe this will help him come back over to the family biz. But uh as for now, you know, run your little store, do your little thing. Now, this building that he had turned into a health food store also had a tenant named Kathy McCormick, to whom he became the landlord of. So he's got his health food store, he's a landlord of one tenant, and he fell head over heels in love with Kathy like immediately. And they started dating. Now the store didn't end up making any real profit, and Seymour wanted him to close it up, sell, and move back home to join the family business. After some time, he had decided to do that and moved back to New York with Kathy. So they moved to Katona and moved in with Douglas and his wife. Which was kind of weird to me.
SPEAKER_07:It's very weird because they all have a lot of money.
SPEAKER_00:Well, and also there's rivalry. Now I don't know how Seymour was with his money. Maybe he was like, I'm gonna give you this, you can you can start a business, but I'm not gonna give it to you to l I don't know. I don't know how Seymour was.
SPEAKER_07:Yeah, I mean they yeah, they I just feel like the workability, they could have had their own shit, you know. I don't know.
SPEAKER_00:Well, Douglas had a mansion because Douglas had already joined the family business, was making money, him and his wife had a man, like so Bob and Kathy move in. Right. And then they married on April 12th, 1973. And if you've been paying attention, that's Bob's birthday. Oh. Yeah. So he was 30 years old at that time. Now, like I said, Bob and Douglas didn't really get along. And even though they were all staying in a very spacious mansion, it was a very tense situation. And Kathy began to feel a little uncomfortable. That tension, you know, when you're in that situation, that energy starts to bog down on you. Right. And you're like, I want out. Now, Kathy, she was in nursing nursing school at this time, so Bob was the main source of income. And she had been like, this is confusing to me because she had been a dental hygienist when they met. Then I guess maybe she decided to join the nursing program, and he's like, hey, my family has money, you don't really have to work, you can pursue a bigger career if you want to. I'm not really sure how that went down. So she wasn't working anymore. She was in nursing school. And then Seymour and uh Seymour allowed Bob and Kathy to move into the company Penthouse in the city, looking uh overlooking the Hudson River. So they did get their own space.
SPEAKER_07:Right. Right. Yeah, I feel like this has been talked about a lot, right? This has been a lot of a lot of different podcasts and things.
SPEAKER_02:Mm-hmm.
SPEAKER_07:This is a huge story. A big one. Big one. But you'll know nothing about it. No, I can tell by your feng shui, though, that you've been deep in this for a while now.
SPEAKER_00:Many, many years. So for a while, the couple was very happy, and Kathy thought it was really cool that she got to chill with famous people from time to time. But the newness died down. And Kathy also began to not like, she didn't like how frugal Bob was, and she also didn't like how close Bob was with Suma Bur with Susan Berman. That's his female best friend. Yeah. Now, Susan, at this time, after, you know, a few this has been a few years down the road. Susan worked for Us Weekly, and she was a writer. She wanted writing to be her profession. And that will come up a little later on, also. Well, Kathy wanted to start a family, but Bob wasn't really interested in having kids because he felt like he was a jinx. Oh. Yeah. And I'll get more into where that nickname came from down the road. In a in a maybe not next episode, but the third part of this. So yeah. So that's that's what started that.
SPEAKER_07:So here it is. Okay.
SPEAKER_00:After graduating from the nursing program, Kathy uh enrolled enrolled in medical school, and she wanted to become a pediatrician, and she kind of found a group of her own friends to spend time with. You know, Bob spent a lot of time with Susan. She kind of felt left out. So she's like, well, now I got my my school friends. My shit going on.
SPEAKER_07:My own shit. Yes.
SPEAKER_00:Well, Bob started to become very jealous of that and a little possessive. And he didn't like that she would spend time with friends or even her family. But he was doing the same thing. He was doing the same thing. Yeah.
SPEAKER_07:Right.
SPEAKER_00:Right, right, right.
SPEAKER_07:Yeah, nah. Yeah, nah, nah, nah, yeah, nah.
SPEAKER_00:Very narcissistic. Okay. Red flag. Red flag. Nah, yeah, nah. Red flag.
SPEAKER_07:And yeah, and nah.
SPEAKER_00:Now Kathy's family had loved Bob for the first few years, but as time went by, they noticed that he never really wanted to spend time with them. And would start to get mad at Kathy spending time with them. She would slowly start revealing to friends that he had become physically abusive.
SPEAKER_07:So he just could not fucking have the other side of what he was and be okay with it.
SPEAKER_00:Yeah, it's gonna get darker and deeper. Come on. Deeper and darker. Dick Durst. So, and get this. He would even start timing her visits with her family while he sat in the car. And if she went past that time, he would go in and drag her out.
SPEAKER_07:That's disgusting.
SPEAKER_00:That's still not ringing a bell to you.
SPEAKER_07:No. Okay. What's what I mean saying it's disgusting. I'm I'm saying if you're gonna have your things, you gotta let her have her thing.
SPEAKER_00:He's very disgusting. I mean, like a vile human being. And we'll get more into it. Here we go, right? Now, between late 1980 and all the way up until late 1981, she did secretly hire a divorce lawyer to talk to them about what she could do, how she could get out of this marriage, coming up ahead a little bit. And it took some time to get all that accomplished while going to medical school, because that's like all your time. All your time. Yeah. So on January 30th, 1982, Bob took them to their vacation home in South Salem, which was right by Truesdale Lake. Now I'm not sure why. Because three weeks before this vacation, Bob had beaten Kathy so bad that she had had to go to the hospital. Like a full facial bruises. No. Terrible. Terrible, okay? But she did not press charges.
SPEAKER_07:I damn sure would have.
SPEAKER_00:Instead, she asked for a$250,000 divorce settlement. Now his answer was to cancel her credit cards, remove her name from the joint bank account, and refuse to pay her tuition.
SPEAKER_07:No, you go scorched earth, dude. If somebody's gonna abuse you physically, or in any way, you go scorched earth. You're like I'm gonna go to the city. Well, he went scorched earth. He did. Yeah. She should have way before that.
SPEAKER_00:The first, the first uh you gotta understand the times. Remember the times. A whole castle.
SPEAKER_07:Yeah. With a little French dude on top. He was a little crunched. Oh my god. Yes. Yes. She should have been on top of that fucking castle full of red flags. And she should have said, I'll fought on fought in your general direction.
SPEAKER_00:That's all she should have said. So she he was, or she was, Kathy was just months away from getting her degree. He stops paying her tuition. And guess what the little cherry on top was? Bob was cheating on Kathy with Prudence Pharaoh. Now, Prudence Pharaoh is Mia Faro's sister. Mia Faro was the lead in Rosemary's Baby, The Great Gatsby, Married Woody Allen. Is that ringing any bells? Yeah, yes, yes.
SPEAKER_07:It's things that I'm supposed to know, but I don't remember. I know.
SPEAKER_00:Jesse can't like he's not obsessed with.
SPEAKER_07:No.
SPEAKER_00:Okay, so when I love a movie, and I know there's several people out here like that. Um, I gotta Google everything about everybody. And even if it's past movies that I've loved, you know, I'm like, I want to know everything about these people.
SPEAKER_07:So And what you're passionate about, though, your passionate.
SPEAKER_00:Mia Farrow, well, I mean, she has she's no longer with us, but I mean that was a huge scandal in the 90s where you know Mia was married to Woody Allen, they adopted an Asian child, and now Woody Allen is married to that Asian castle. What? Mailing, yes. Whoa. Whoa. Huge scandal. Another castle. Yeah, Woody Allen's a huge red flag. What? Um, so Bob was a cheater and a beater, and for some reason, Kathy went on vacation with him. Um, but no judgment here. I've been in a situation like that, so I have not judging.
SPEAKER_07:I think he should have met Marianne and Wanda. They were the best of friends.
SPEAKER_00:Bob had to die. So um Earl. And you know, maybe this was to try and salvage the marriage. Um, but not too long after they arrived, they got into a fight. Now Kathy decided to make an unexpected appearance at her friend Gilbert Najami's I'm I'm I'm hoping I'm saying that right. Gilbert Najami's dinner party, and this was in Newark, Connecticut. She wasn't dressed up as normal. Like she was just kind of hanging out, she was in sweatpants, and they were like, what? But she seemed very upset. But then Bob called at the party, probably was like, said some fucking horrible narcissistic shit, got her to come back home, uh, or not back home, but back to the vacation house in South Salem. Now, according to Bob, he says that he put Kathy on a train back to the city at Katona Rail Station, and she called him when she got back to Manhattan, letting him know that she had made it home safely. He says then he went home and went to bed.
SPEAKER_07:I don't believe it. This is a setup.
SPEAKER_00:This was the last time Kathy McCormick Durst was ever seen.
SPEAKER_07:See, I knew you were coming with that. I knew it. I could see it. Lindsay.
SPEAKER_00:And I'm so sorry, that's where we're gonna leave off for today.
SPEAKER_07:Oh, Lindsay, I could see it. But I mean, you know, but Lindsay. And now here's this whole picture of castles with red flags and oh this story is going to do nothing but get crazier.
SPEAKER_00:That is your intro into what will be a three-part.
SPEAKER_01:A three-part!
SPEAKER_00:And for our listeners that know this story, don't give Jesse any spoilers because he don't know. No, I don't know. Jesse doesn't know. Jesse doesn't know. Jesse doesn't know.
SPEAKER_07:Yeah. Fuck.
SPEAKER_00:Yeah.
SPEAKER_07:Uh go there. Fat on you once again. I don't know, whatever he says. I forgot.
SPEAKER_00:So what do you think so far?
SPEAKER_07:Oh man. In your general direction or mine? Because uh all I see is just a castle full of red flags, and now we got a missing princess. And it's horrible. It is money and bullshit. Mm-hmm and bullshit and bullshit. But it set him off because he didn't have a good bye-bye mommy.
SPEAKER_00:You know what's crazy is he. I don't want to reveal too much because it's gonna come into play later on. I don't want to reveal too much to you. No, the salad. Our listeners probably know. But um, he's still very, very late in life, he still referred to her as mommy.
SPEAKER_07:Yeah. Yeah. That's where that's where each you really did paint.
SPEAKER_00:I think that that's where uh little Bobby Durst died.
SPEAKER_07:Yeah, and little Bobby Ross Lindsay over here has painted a big picture. Not happy little trees. No happy trees. No, not at all.
SPEAKER_00:No happy accidents either.
SPEAKER_07:So we're gonna miss a show.
