A cute little town can still hold a nightmare. Jesse finally tells the story he’s been avoiding for weeks: the House of Prayer cult connected to Mother Anna, also known as Anna Elizabeth Young, and the years of abuse tied to Micanopy, Florida. We keep our usual drink-and-talk rhythm, but this one comes with heavy trigger warnings because the details are hard to say out loud, let alone hear.

We trace how a charismatic leader builds a “church” that looks clean from the outside while control tightens on the inside: new names, isolation, fear of hell, and punishment framed as holiness. We walk through the moments that should have stopped it, the cases that didn’t, and the point where the harm becomes undeniable, including horrifying abuse against children and the way members stayed loyal even after seeing the worst. We also talk about what it means when “faith” gets used as a weapon, and why cult dynamics don’t announce themselves until you’re already trapped.

Then the timeline stretches forward: years on the run, a later arrest that feels infuriatingly small compared to the damage, and the shock of new investigations after Joy, Anna’s daughter, finally speaks up. We share resources to learn more, including Joy’s nonprofit Prevent the Pain at preventthepain.org, plus documentaries that put faces and places to what we’re describing. If you listen to true crime podcasts, cult stories, and survivor advocacy content, this is one you won’t forget. Bonus Episode Setup And Drinks

SPEAKER_03

Hey, Lindsay.

SPEAKER_01

Hey, Jesse.

SPEAKER_03

I don't know if I want to do this, but how are you doing?

SPEAKER_01

I'm doing good. This is bonus episode.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, we're here. I mean, I think I need like four more energy drinks and a kick in the nuts before I do this one.

SPEAKER_01

I put plenty in your mixed drinks. So, do you want me to name what we're having to drink? Because I made it.

SPEAKER_03

Do the things.

SPEAKER_01

So I kind of did the same thing we did in the last episode where I mixed some vodka with some lime juice. Ooh, I forgot to put freshly squeezed lime. I'll do that on the next round. So vodka, lime juice, lime soda water. And today everywhere is sold out of the lime slush Alani. Thanks, guys. But that was good.

SPEAKER_03

I know that shit's good. Last time we did that, was it last weekend? A couple weeks ago. I'm gonna find some more for next week.

SPEAKER_01

But um, so we're using Alani cherry slush. So we got like a cherry lime egg going on. It's really good though. Did you have some yet?

SPEAKER_03

I'm going to right now. Okay. Let's do it. Cheers. Woo!

SPEAKER_01

This is a Jesse episode.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, I'm not ready to do this. And I'll tell you how I think about it. Uh after a little bit of grooving. Yeah.

unknown

It's very good. Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

You get it down.

SPEAKER_01

I may put on the next round, I may put like the, like I said, the freshly squeezed lime and then a little bit of the cherries that we have in the fridge.

SPEAKER_03

You know, last season we did a cult. Religious cult. A couple of them. But this one Well, we did one big one. We did a big one.

SPEAKER_01

But then we did the hometown one. And then we did what I think is like the cult.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

So yeah, we've done a couple. But um hometown cult was like this, like uh, I think it's like our second biggest one that we've done. Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Well, let's plug those episodes real quick for anybody that's new here. Hey, hey, how are you? Um, we're Jesse and Lindsay, and uh, we talk about true crime and we drink and we play music.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, and this is my turn because Lindsay usually tells the stories, and I guess I have to tell one every once in a while.

SPEAKER_01

Well, Jesse decided to get a little nosy in the uh in the research that he was gonna forward to me. Never got to me. But anyway, so uh we talked about our hometown cult, which is the end timers mead ministry cult that happened here in our hometown of Lake City, Florida. And then, of course, we talked about the motherfucking People's Temple, Jim Jones.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, uh, and then we made drinks during, and it is a it's still a thing.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, we gotta order some more flavorade.

SPEAKER_03

So we've flavorade, yeah. What do we called it the Jim Jones? Jim Jones, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

So it's flavorade and vodka. That's it.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, that's the drink. A little rough. Oh god. But uh the drink's good. Yeah, the store was bad.

SPEAKER_01

Well, I think next time we make it, we need to make it with the soda water because it gives it that little bit of bubbly. I think that would be good.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, I'm excited. I mean, maybe we need just we need to come up with a drink after this one. I don't know. I don't know. We uh need to get off into this, Lindsay, before I just lose my whole change.

SPEAKER_01

Is there a drink involved in this cult though?

SPEAKER_03

You'll find out. Okay, maybe not. I don't know. There's uh a lot to drink about though.

Past Cult Cases And The Hook

SPEAKER_01

Um what are we drinking about today? You gotta give us a clue. You said it's a cult. What's the name of the cult?

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, I I don't want to get off into the name yet. I just want to I want to tell stories. I want to I want to go off into the dream. So we're drinking about a cult that happened in McKinope, Florida. Yeah, which is a small town just south of Gainesville. And me and Lizzie visited there. We'll talk about that later on. Yeah, uh, so the dream of following a spiritual leader to righteousness is a common way for people that believe in a higher being. This story will not be that beautiful picture, though. Heard the early 1940s, Anna Elizabeth Young came into this world, and what she did with her time on earth will stay with you forever.

SPEAKER_01

And Jesse's taking a sip. Y'all, you have no idea. He's had this tucked away for about three weeks, and he has just been putting it off and putting it off. I'm making it.

Who Mother Anna Is

SPEAKER_03

I'm getting into these words right now, and I'm just like, oh my god, damn. This is gonna be okay.

SPEAKER_01

So welcome to my world, bitch.

SPEAKER_03

Lindsay. So Married in 1970, she went by Anna Davison. She moved to Chicago, then married in the 80s to Jonah, where they both took on the surname Young. Like they both took it on.

SPEAKER_01

So Jonah's original last name was not Young? Uh-uh. Okay. So well, that's a different concept.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, along the way from Ohio to Chicago, then to Florida, there was a lot of things that happened, and I'll talk about those later on. Okay. There's half a century of disgusting, inhumane things that take place.

SPEAKER_01

I got chills.

SPEAKER_03

Uh Anna was a small built African-American woman and beautiful. Um, she had the outspoken power and manipulation that would make anyone believe her. Like she could just sway anything at any time.

SPEAKER_01

Well, that is um a common ground for cult leaders, have we as we have seen, just for the couple that we've covered, you it's it's gotta be somebody that's charismatic. They're they're gonna suck you in. Am I right?

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, yeah, yeah. And you never know what with people with that power, you never know what they could do. You know, they could just grasp onto it or do something positive with it. So some people they feed off of that. So can be a rough one, Lindsay. I'm just not really ready. I'm looking at these words and it's still killing me right now.

SPEAKER_01

Take a deep breath.

SPEAKER_03

You got this, yeah, and I'm listening. Yeah, women wanted to be her, and men wanted to be around her and just experience all the the ambience and the and everything that she has just radiating off of her. It just had a really strong presence, you know. Um, so yes, this is true crime on this one. So all the trigger warnings and all the things, right? This is gonna be a little tough. The salad that we always talk about. We uh we try to analyze it. It maybe started from her move from Chicago to make an OP. Um in 1973, her stepdaughter came up missing at a beach in Chicago before they'd moved out.

SPEAKER_01

So a show a beach in Chicago is gonna be a great lake.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Right, okay.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. So like the whole town and everything was looking like they all really dove into it.

SPEAKER_01

And so this was the daughter of the guy who they together took on the surname Young. Yeah. Okay.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, so I mean, it was just like this big thing, you know. I guess we'll we'll talk about a little bit more about that. I mean, there's you know, documentaries and things that I'd seen on it.

SPEAKER_01

We'll plug those at the end, kind of like I do.

SPEAKER_03

There's just there's a lot of stuff. But after that all happened, you know, it was like I think Anna decided that she was going to find Jesus and she moved to the small town of Mickinope and decided she was gonna start a church, you know. We just we always analyze all this all the stuff, but it's part of the salad, you know. It was like the beginning of things, you know.

House Of Prayer Takes Shape

SPEAKER_01

Did the stepdaughter ever get found? Okay, I'll wait. He gave me a look. He gave me a look, you guys.

SPEAKER_03

So oh yeah. So she founded uh the House of Prayer in 1983. This would be a place where an old testament slash non-denominational twist with a Jesus way of worship would be formed. So more like a Pentecostal type thing.

SPEAKER_01

Okay, so they're Old Testament where Jesus has not come yet, but old beliefs, but they do believe in Jesus. Okay, gotcha. So kind of like uh a mesionic Jew.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, I mean, but it was very uh charismatic, you know, like the Pentecostal or whatever, you know, where the devil can be put into you at any time, but it also needs to be beat out of you.

SPEAKER_00

Oh God, here we go.

SPEAKER_03

Well, this style of worship came a boarding school where children and others could come and learn as well. Anna became Mother Anna and Jonah, which is like the co-founder, he was like the head pastor because in this religion you you really kind of had a head male, you know, figure, and Anna was just kind of like the mama, you know, mother Anna.

SPEAKER_01

And this is very common. I know that we have only covered a couple cults here, but I have plenty more on my roster. And that is a common theme. Like it's either gonna be mother or it's gonna be father. Like Jim Jones was father, he was Daddy Jones.

SPEAKER_03

Well, Jonah went by brother Jonah there, okay. And then, like a lot of the people that did finally form into the congregation was it it wound up being a small congregation here, but brother Jonah and Anna, they would change names of everybody. You know, they all had kind of religious names, you know, kind of came up with their own little twist on things.

SPEAKER_01

Is it anything like the uh the Catholics did to the Native American children?

SPEAKER_03

No, it's just whoever came, they just kind of renamed them into more biblical names. Into biblical names. Yeah, okay. Stuff like that.

SPEAKER_01

So that's kind of like what the Catholics did to the Native American Catholic.

SPEAKER_03

Kind of like uh family members around us do sometimes.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. Oh, yeah, you're right. Well, we'll keep that one. Yeah, we'll talk about that one.

SPEAKER_03

But it was really, really for sure known that you know Anna had full control. Like she was the head, the neck, every bit of it because of her presence, her persona, her leadership. Everybody just flocked to her guidance and whatever she said, that was fucking law, you know.

SPEAKER_01

She was Queen B. She was mother.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, so the local area was small, but eventually brought around 25 members to the church where they would live the dream life that Anna gave them in loving fear of God.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, loving fear of her.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. Her followers would mostly stay on the makeshift compound with uh the black painted fence to help keep people in or out. So it was just like kind of had like this barrier around it. Everybody kind of stayed secluded to the area and just stayed in into the into the area.

SPEAKER_01

And that is very um on on track with cults' behavior. Like they do like to do that, they like to build fences, they like to, or gates, whatever, what have you.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. So and they also mostly adorn like holy looking uniforms, you know, kind of like uh, you know, whole the the full robes and stuff, like old testament style, you know. So they kind of took on that, and um, it was just kind of like, what? You know, this is crazy. But people were flocking to it, and like they just thought this was a cool thing, you know. I mean, imagine you know, a small town and uh moving in, you know, you got somebody that's just going around, they're charismatic, and you're just like, okay, I kind of want to grasp onto this. This is something new, it's exciting, but at the same time, like we don't really know all the inner workings, but we're gonna, of course, everything's gonna be pleasant to begin with, right?

SPEAKER_01

Well, that's uh so that's the common theme uh around any cult uh cases that I've listened to and research. You don't know that you're joining a cult until you're in it.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. I mean, even Jonah, her husband, his name was originally like Robert Davison. So like, yeah, so it was just like the thing, you know. And Anna's daughter was with her, her name was Joy. And uh they called her uh Sister Mary.

SPEAKER_01

So the little daughter that was Well, Joy is like biblical-ish.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, I mean she was only around. But she became Mary, yeah, and little Joy was only around nine, but all the followers feared her.

SPEAKER_00

Really?

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, because if Joy would say something, it was what happened, no matter what, you know. Especially with kids and and being around other kids, you know. Along with this style of belief, you have to have sin and you have to have a way to punish it. If you were found guilty of sin, Mother Anna would give you that old-time healing.

SPEAKER_01

And what did that consist of?

SPEAKER_03

In 1988, Jonah died what was found to look like a mechanic accident. So he was like, looked like they were changing a tire in a truck, or he was, and was found dead underneath of it.

SPEAKER_01

So was that a wink wink made to look like an accident?

Abuse Escalates And Nikki’s Burns

SPEAKER_03

Maybe. I mean, okay. There's some speculations that are going on kind of with some of that, and I'm not really sure. But allegedly. Allegedly, so maybe that was another thing that was added on to the salad, though. Who knows? But after that, the members said things really took a change within Anna? After Brother Jonah died, yeah. Being the evangelist she was, she even mastered the art of speaking in tongues. Of course. This was not like others. Her voice got deep and dark in the middle of it. Not the typical way of speaking in tongues. No, that's not, yeah. Yeah, very darker than a holy presence. Turning it up to ten while chanting the blood of Jesus would also get the crowd going along, jumping and flopping around, enveloped in the Holy Spirit. Hang on, everyone, I'm gonna kind of throttle up a little bit here. But before we do that, let's jump back to 1985. Okay? Okay. An eight-year-old, John Neal, was hospitalized. He had a severe skin infection. Maybe uh that along with the scars and part of his ear missing would have been enough to go after the church and everything. They just did a simple check, though, and didn't find anything wrong. Like a welfare check? Yeah, okay. On the church, after John Neal was hospitalized and spent a little bit of time of foster care, he was returned right back into the arms of Mother Anna.

SPEAKER_01

So, really quick, who was John Neal? Is a member of the church. So he bel he's he's somebody else's kid. He does not belong to Anna. Okay, gotcha. So but they were all kind of like her children, yeah type thing. Okay, like Jim Jones.

SPEAKER_03

So they had like members and stuff in and out and there, and just you know, followers and worshipers and such. Like I said, you know, after that, then her husband passed away earlier.

SPEAKER_01

So but um so that happened before John uh before Jonah passed away. Yeah. Okay.

SPEAKER_03

So I'm just kind of stacking up something that's that's really tangible right now that actually happened to where they couldn't fucking hide it, you know. But with that being said, though, Anna would also go out to revivals and even met with other people with wayward kids to add to the fold. So it was like, you know, we had like a boarding school, we could actually also bring people in and we could follow Mother Anna because she's building her flock. She had it going on. Oh, yeah, come on down to the church. We're gonna take care of your baby. Oh god. To the public eye, everything was great. Okay, up until 1992. Nikki Nicholson's parents decided to let her join the house of prayer. Okay. Was she was Nikki a wayward child? Behavior problems and shit. Probably at, yeah, and her parents were just like, Well, hey, you know, take her in, you can you can lead her to Jesus, right? It wasn't long after being at the house of prayer, they discovered the devil in Nikki. And a beating wouldn't help this time because mama said she smelt bad. And God blessed her with an idea, Lindsay. With members including Anna's daughter Joy, they helped wash the sins away in a metal wash tub. They filled it with scalding hot water along with bleach and Tide so it would smell good and stuck twelve-year-old Nikki in. Mama was gonna scrub the evil off of her skin, but her skin started falling off as well. Can you imagine, Lindsay?

SPEAKER_01

No, I'm already clouding up, man.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, your parents, your parents just drop you off at this church, and they're just like, hey, this is gonna be great for you.

SPEAKER_02

Oh god.

SPEAKER_03

Oh, but the parents were part of the church as well, so like they kind of joined in, you know? So after they did their like kind of just holistic things, and they were like, they're trying to pray the the pain away and all the the the wounds, and they made ointments and all that, she still had to go to the hospital.

SPEAKER_01

I'm just imagining how scary this was for a 12-year-old. Yeah, you know, boy, girl, it doesn't matter.

SPEAKER_03

I mean, and after all this happened, Lindsay, like the parents didn't even get to witness that happening. They found their daughter tied to a bed, laying over there, writhing in pain with her skin falling off.

SPEAKER_02

Fuck.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. So charges were filed. I hope so. And Anna was on the run with her daughter Joy. Nikki's burns were so bad, Lindsay, that she had to relearn how to walk. Yeah. Around this time, though, Anna was on the run and the church disbanded. This was like the full fallen out thing. Yeah. Did you imagine though? Just like, holy shit, you know? This kind of thing.

SPEAKER_01

I mean, you see me. I'm over here. I'm I'm trying to keep my lashes on because we gotta do a recap.

SPEAKER_03

I'm just trying to maintain my composure and then read this at the same time. This is hard enough for me as it is.

SPEAKER_01

Oh my God. Now I know why you said what you said and why we felt what we felt, but we'll get there, yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, I mean, it was like, okay, finally the church kind of just snapped out of it, or they they finally felt like they had a way out, you know? Because Anna was on the run.

SPEAKER_01

So well, because even when you're in this situation where you feel like you are, because a cult's gonna make you feel loved and make you feel at home. But there comes a certain thing where, like, something like that, that's too much. Any normal human brain, even if they are it is, it is washed, you know what I mean? Even if the brain has been washed, it's going to recognize evil.

SPEAKER_03

Oh, but if you didn't follow her, you're going to hell though. So charismatically. And it's gonna be the worst. Worse than the beating that I gave you earlier for doing something that I just didn't like. You know what I'm saying? So that was really what what the basis of all this is. Oh, it's really rough. You know, because of fear, you know, that she would just instill all of this, and finally she's gone, so they can step away. So there was eight years of Anna and Joy, her daughter running. You know, it took them to Georgia, Ohio, Illinois, and they both changed their names. That they were just moving from state to state, you know, and and living with family and like church communities.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

On The Run Then Time Served

SPEAKER_03

So in November of 2000, an article was sent out in a tabloid, and just a few weeks later, a coworker recognized Anna's face. It was from like the National Enquirer, you know, like a publishing that was in there.

SPEAKER_01

I remember reading the National Inquiry.

SPEAKER_03

So she was on the FBI most wanted list at that time. Yeah. Anna was turned in and found living in the attic in uh Alton, I think it was, Illinois, with her family members, like under the name Elizabeth uh McDuffie. So she was just on the run, changing names, doing whatever, and people were just shoving her into being able to work, but kind of under the under the table, you know, and all that stuff. So she was extradited back to Alachua County, Florida to face the child abuse felony charges and sentenced to time served waiting on the trial. So by the time all that transpired between her moving and getting everything ready, they just figured it was just time served. That really pissed me off. Yeah, I fucking hate that.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, so well, that was like uh what did we talk about a couple weeks ago? Griselda, you know, after. They stacked that murder charge on her. They just gave her time served. I don't I think you should get a whole different, a whole new sentence. Right. After that.

SPEAKER_03

So after she was remote released, she moved to Marietta, Georgia.

SPEAKER_01

I know where exactly where that is.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, where she lived a free woman for 16 more years. Joy, now a grown woman, her daughter, had a fallen out with Mother Anna. And in that argument, Joy snapped. And uh out of the brainwashing and everything that her mother has done all the way up to this point, and she was just like good for her. Yeah. So, mother, you also killed two children, is what she said in front of all the people that were there. The people were fucking shocked. After this, there was an investigation in 2016. It was triggered, okay? By Anna's own daughter, Joy.

SPEAKER_01

That's that wasn't that long ago.

SPEAKER_03

No, so we're moving up, right? She provided first-hand witness accounts of abuse with children and adults being locked up, and the children held and locked up without food and water, like in like a hot box, and they had a few different ones at the compound when they had the church going. But one of the children mentioned was Emmin Harper. Anna changed Emman David Harper's name to Moses after she took him in while in Chicago before starting the cult in Mikinope. So she moved down with him. Baby Emmin.

SPEAKER_01

But she changed it to Moses. Okay.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, so baby Moses moved down with him, right? From Chicago. From Chicago to start the, you know, the whole church and all that stuff.

SPEAKER_01

So this was just a child in her care.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, she took him on because uh baby Moses' mother couldn't take care of him, so she kind of adopted him or just took him down to Florida before they started the church. More horrific reports would turn up along with this cult investigation, such as high-ranking member O. D. Pua, known as Elder Adam, was his name, who uh confessed to an affair outside of the cult, and Mama Anna used old scripture, Matthews 5 30. If your right hand causes you to stumble, cut it off. With this lust demon, he, along with the celibacy rules with his own fucking wife in the in the cult, he couldn't have sex with his own wife. So he kind of stepped away and did some stuff and came back and admitted to it. Yeah. Elder Adam iced the area, numbed it, and performed the self-mutilation on his own penis. The he almost died of infection and still stayed in the cold after that.

SPEAKER_01

I mean, I'm not surprised, honestly, because we seen how Jim treated people and they stayed. We seen how Charles Meade treated people and they stayed. Right.

SPEAKER_03

And it's crazy to me, like you ice up your own stuff and cut it off in a shed over there, and just we're like, you're gonna be okay, right? I'm gonna I'm gonna I'm good. This is my way.

SPEAKER_01

Look at what look at what I'm saying.

SPEAKER_03

This is my way to get back to Jesus.

SPEAKER_01

Jesus.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

And here I am, Jesus Christ. I gotta find a new sling. I don't want to say Jesus Christ no more.

SPEAKER_03

Members of the church were often whipped 33 times while mama would shout out the blood of Jesus.

SPEAKER_01

So like a ritual.

SPEAKER_03

Jesus died at 33.

SPEAKER_01

Like a ritual.

SPEAKER_03

Yep. And if you moved, she would start counting over again.

SPEAKER_00

Do you know that there is so much witchcraft in Christianity? I'm just gonna put that out there. I'm gonna say that really softly. Okay.

SPEAKER_03

So yeah, the 33 lashes were like each each year of Jesus, you know. And if you moved, we'd start all over again because you didn't love him enough. Blood of Jesus, blood of Jesus. Uh, from what I gathered, this could be a three-part episode, Lindsay, because it's just so much. And I'm just kind of gathering stuff here and there, trying to put it all together from what I've seen and what I found like on Google and stuff. This is a hard one. You can't just be kiki, ha ha, and none of this. There's no mouth dropped, wide open.

SPEAKER_01

Well, it's hard to have them in in a lot of our episodes. Uh, but we do, you know, we try to keep it as light-hearted as possible, but cults fucking really I cults just really like it's like a darkness that just sits over you when you're even thinking or talking or remind reminding everybody that her own daughter's the one that started shedding light on all this stuff.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, it's just like she's had enough, kind of dodged a few things, you know, here and there, but could have been whatever. But every time people would come and look at the church in the little area, the compound and stuff, they didn't find anything wrong. It was all clean, nice, proper, taken care of, you know.

SPEAKER_01

Same with Jim Jones, his son, remember?

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. So in 1983, I'm moving all around and saying some dates here. Um, Katonia Jackson, she died in the care of Anna Young of a seizure. Yeah, Anna Young would withhold medicine and medication because God could just make it better, the holistic healing, you know.

SPEAKER_01

And that's one of the main problems that I have with a lot of old school type Christianity.

SPEAKER_03

Mm-hmm. So during all this, reports would say the onset of the seizure was a punishment that Katonia was made to jump and shout blood of Jesus until she finally collapsed. This case went cold for decades from 1983 to 2017.

SPEAKER_01

Oh my God. That's a lot of jumping.

Joy Speaks Up And New Evidence

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. Just to keep jumping, jumping. Blood of Jesus, blood of Jesus, blood of Jesus. And then you got the whole how old was Kobe? The whole con the whole congregation is just in there yelling, screaming, everything. So, and I'll talk about her age and stuff, I think. Okay. These are babies though. Like they're youngins, youngins. So I'm sexy my stomach. Yeah. Let's move up to let's actually let's move back to 1968. Anna was arrested in Ohio for child abuse. Before she moved to Nickinope. Okay. Uh it was involving a five-year-old before she met before she moved to Chicago. So this was from Ohio.

SPEAKER_01

Ohio, okay.

SPEAKER_03

To Chicago. So even before she moved to Chicago, where her daughter went missing. Yeah. At the beach, right? Then, as I mentioned in 1973, you know, the daughter, the stepdaughter, you know, Kathleen, where she came up missing.

SPEAKER_01

So what happened in Ohio?

SPEAKER_03

Out of Michigan State Park. So that's just one thing that I had found before she had moved there.

SPEAKER_01

Okay.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, just a child abuse charge. I didn't do a lot of detail.

SPEAKER_01

So she was arrested for child abuse in Ohio before she goes to Chicago, where her stepdaughter goes missing. Yeah, at the beach.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. A state park. Hundreds of people were looking for her, you know, never did find Kathleen Davis. Just never was found. But according to Anna's family members, after all this came to light with this investigation and all that stuff, Anna would tie her up and lock her in a closet.

SPEAKER_00

No.

SPEAKER_03

They witnessed that.

SPEAKER_01

So witnesses say that Wait, her family witnessed it and never came forward?

SPEAKER_03

Never came forward. So everybody was tight-lipped while hundreds of people are looking for this baby.

SPEAKER_01

I'm fucking pissed right now.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. Also, more witnesses came out that they buried baby Moses on the compound in Mikinope after he died. Lindsay, I'll go ahead and bring it up now. In the middle of this.

SPEAKER_01

That's why. Right there.

SPEAKER_03

In the middle of this, I brought this up and Lindsay and I were on vacation and I was like, let's just go to the spot because it's on the way back. And just driving up on the road. We didn't even get all the way to it. We had to go around the house that we stopped at to actually see it. Physically could not put the car and drive and move up there.

SPEAKER_01

When Jesse turned down this road, my entire body felt this thick presence and my arms started tingling. And I was like, what the fuck is this? Where are we going? What are we doing? And he showed me where this all happened. I didn't know what happened here, but he showed me where this happened. And I've got tears in my eyes right now. My lashes are gonna come off.

SPEAKER_03

Members from the church said that they buried him on the compound after burning him in a barrel. And they did an investigation and tried to find the bait the baby's bones and stuff. Never did find them.

SPEAKER_01

And I want our listeners to know that somebody has bought this house and they have children. We saw kids' toys.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, well, that was that was the house in front of it. We didn't actually go past it to see the compound.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, okay, okay. Because it was a private drive.

SPEAKER_03

It looks like a private drive. Actually, that road was a loop. Remember, I said it's right there, and then we came up and we found the same road.

SPEAKER_01

I don't know if I ever want to go back there again.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

So I was nauseous.

SPEAKER_03

Jesse was nauseous. And I'd found it on Zillow. Like the place was on Zillow, the compound was on for sale. It's off the market now, so somebody has bought it, I think. Yeah. Could not even drive all the way up there to it. It was just gut-wrenching. The deepest thick feeling of just turn the fuck around. And that's what we did when we left.

SPEAKER_01

We did, and we went to we went to our brunch spot where we actually got married, and we were just we just kind of set. We usually have a great time when we go to this place. Yeah and we could not shake it. We were just like, uh.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. So I mean, after the witnesses said that they had burned him and all that, more evidence came up and they couldn't find the remains, you know. Like I said, but they were keeping him in a crawl space as punishment. No. Yeah. She would lock him in without food and water. This is in Florida. You know, this is hot. And they're dressed in these big robes.

SPEAKER_01

We drive past that motherfucker 40 times a year.

SPEAKER_03

Joy even said that she remembers touching his lips and the skin falling off.

SPEAKER_02

Stop it.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. See, brainwashed them so bad, Lindsay. They thought whatever she wanted, if you didn't do it, you weren't going to heaven. Even little Joy helped with punishments. That's why they feared her. Whatever she would say, you know, her mama told her she could do whatever she wanted to. And they had to fear her.

SPEAKER_01

My vodka ain't vodkaying enough for this story.

SPEAKER_03

That's a rough one. You know, whatever Joy said, it didn't matter, you know. I mean, one of them was like an altercation over um a whipping that a kid had. Let me, let me, let me.

SPEAKER_01

So she's just beaten kids and adults when she felt like, I'm just trying to like gather this whole picture. Whatever she considered a sinful action.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. Yeah. By the time Joy spoke up, it was way too late. But I mean, what could you do? You were on the run, just doing whatever you could, you know? She was in fear too.

SPEAKER_01

Joy was brainwashed. Yeah. She was. And it's not a different type of brainwashing when it's your own mother.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Conditioned, groomed, all the things.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, no way. You just had to you had to follow it, you know. You had no other choice. Yeah, I'm going with mama. I better go. And mama was just such a big presence in your life. And then you finally just snap out of it and you're like, Mom, you're full of shit. This is this is crazy. You know, this isn't right. You know, because a lot of the members, even after all of this, everything that they had done, they still stayed real faithful because they were just passionate toward their afterlife, toward their spiritualism. They were just so passionate. Even after all that was presented to them and the hell they went through, a lot of them still stayed faithful toward the religion. And I get that. You're allowed to have your own connection. But a cult like this is like not the way to go. As soon as you see anything weird like this, first second. I mean, you gotta feel the vibes, right? You gotta, you can't just be like, this is awesome. This is what I want to feed into. A lot of those folks were just like in small towns, haven't experienced this much enthusiasm, and you you start putting all of that in the middle of religion, it it does, is it's grasping because you get so much more emotion in inside of what you're already feeling towards your spiritualism. That's the biggest leadership that you can even grab really easy when you have charismatic religion and you've never been presented that before in your life, it's easy to grasp onto.

SPEAKER_01

Well, there's a lot of shady things. So our our hometown cult has, for the most part, been disbanded. Like, you know, it's it's nothing to where it used to be. But we got a little mini mega church right down here down the road. That's there's been a lot of shady shit happening, that thing. And guess what? It's still popular. People still go all the time.

SPEAKER_03

People are signing contracts to go to this church, and paying all the money just to be part of it. Paying all the money. So a lot of the lot of the ones, instead of you getting beat for Jesus or whatever, you had to pay money for Jesus. If you don't pay your way, you don't get to ride the boat. It's crazy. But it's just all the things that happened from 1973 to 1992, the charges were set. Okay. Lined everything up, all these allegations came out. Sure, pure witnesses and people that are testifying that were part of the church were coming out. Joy came out, people with still scars on them were there.

SPEAKER_02

What?

SPEAKER_03

People with missing parts were there. They're all testifying in the courts, everything, right? Just they were just so manipulated, and that's just what they said when they did the trial. But in the end, I think that four people died from all from from Anna's fucking horrific life. I think four people at least has died.

SPEAKER_01

Then more have been tortured and whipped, so many more at the end of the day. Dismembered and oh my god.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. So now Anna never even accepted the charges. She would just plea no contest.

SPEAKER_01

How old was she at this point? Do you have that down?

SPEAKER_03

So Anna died just 42 days after her sentencing. It was only 30 years' sentence. She died 42 days after. At the age of 79. She died of COVID. What? Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Well, I mean, ding dong, the witch is dead, but like this happens so much in cases that we talk about. Like, they're just to me, it's death is the easy way out. Yeah. Torture this bitch.

SPEAKER_03

I don't know if she died of COVID, but I know she died just 42 days after.

SPEAKER_01

I knew this was during the pandemic time. So most likely.

SPEAKER_03

2021.

SPEAKER_01

So well, that's COVID was still very hot and heavy and rampant. Yeah.

unknown

Wow.

Visiting The Road And Feeling Evil

SPEAKER_03

So yeah, she got her sentence and she's just like, I was no contest. I'm not gonna say anything because me and God know. That's basically how she put it. She didn't have the power anymore at her age either, you know. She I I watched some of the stuff, she just didn't have that power and spunk from some of the early videos and stuff that I'd watched, where she's just jumping and just just beautiful, wearing like those kind of African religious type clothes. They're all just like that.

SPEAKER_01

Well, now you know I've got to watch this shit just to just to have it in my in my visuals.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. So her daughter would go on to start an organization. It was called Prevent the Pain. So check that out. And um is that that's the name of the website? Yeah, you can go to preventhepain.org. Okay, I was gonna say, is it a dot org? Like a nonprofit or something. So so check that out. Well, I'm gonna be checking that out. And I'll I'll I'll tag it into here.

SPEAKER_01

Um, put it in the show notes.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. So uh you just Google it or whatever, you can find it. There's uh Mother Anna on Apple TV that you can watch. Um, there's a couple other things, you know, documentaries and stuff you can find on YouTube. Check out all the stuff. I mean, I hope I put it together right. This is really hard for me.

SPEAKER_01

I've been on the edge of my seat here. You did uh an amazing job tailing this. You broke me.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, well, the the And now I get to break you here shortly, but you broke me. The biggest hard thing about all this. Of course, it's it's it's hard for me to read and do all the I'm I'm doing the editing, I'm doing the mixing while I'm doing all this at one time, and then trying to look at this and scan over with my eyes. And I have a hard enough time reading to begin with, just for myself.

SPEAKER_01

So you did an amazing job, Jesse.

SPEAKER_03

Give yourself you get no applause.

SPEAKER_01

Push that around the applause button right now.

SPEAKER_03

You gotta push it. It's number B. I don't know where it is. It's number B. You gotta push number B on there.

SPEAKER_01

Push a number B.

SPEAKER_03

Oh, God, Lindsay. I'm gonna think I deserve it.

SPEAKER_01

But no, I just want y'all to know Jesse has really been he's been really nervous over here. Bless his little heart. You are so precious.

SPEAKER_03

Well, I mean, just knowing the story and then trying to put the words the correct way. I hope I did it right.

SPEAKER_01

I mean I'm literally over here. You've you've watched me with your own eyes. I'm just looking at you like, sir.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, well, maybe, maybe uh Joy will get a uh little word of the uh wind of this, you know, and be like, okay, you did pretty good, you know, or something. That would be cool. But we'll tag them all in because they deserve it.

SPEAKER_01

So Joy is on the right side of history. Yes.

SPEAKER_03

And I do believe that she had no way out. She had to follow along because some of the some of the members they kind of had resentment still, but you're looking at like an eight to 12 year old girl during the time.

SPEAKER_01

Yes, she how old is Joy now?

SPEAKER_03

Uh, I didn't look. I mean, uh, you ask all these crazy questions, and I didn't look even further. I just stopped here, but I'm sure she's gonna be a little bit more. I'm gonna be doing my own little side research. Um, yeah, I don't know, but check out the stuff, follow stuff. Hopefully, I didn't know.

SPEAKER_01

Well, you said that a lot of this was happening in the 80s, and we're in our 40s, and we were born in the 80s, so I'm gonna I'm gonna guess she was born around in the 70s.

SPEAKER_03

So, but um, I didn't look really uh uh further on into all this. I kind of stopped it here. Like I said, this could have gone on. The people in these churches, some of these people like Emmett and stuff, some of them that are still alive and things like they have scars, they have things that happen to them. It's physically there. And maybe we need to watch the doc here in a little bit, the one that I watched where he's standing up in court and he's just like, Yeah, I still have the lashings on my back. I still have parts of me missing, I still have this and that. Um, everything that just transpired into that, I wish it would have stopped after the child abuse in Ohio would have been cool. Then the daughter missing should have somebody should have said something when it happened in Chicago before she moved to Florida and found Jesus.

SPEAKER_01

And then uh they always find Jesus, don't they? Yeah, I don't know. They always find Jesus when they're in trouble.

SPEAKER_03

I don't know if her husband, I don't know if if if he was just stuffed under there and they looked at the colour. I don't think Jesus would approve. They could have put him under the under the truck and let the jack down. Who knows? She might have wanted more control.

SPEAKER_01

Jonah might have known too much, might have did.

SPEAKER_03

He might have said something, or him being able to go out and do things. Maybe they didn't want the word or some him to say something. Maybe there was an argument, and he's like, Hey, I'm leaving, I'm gonna go do something. That's what I'm saying.

SPEAKER_01

Like, he could have had enough of her too.

SPEAKER_03

Control. Couldn't get away from the control. And the people they they were all standing up and just testifying and and just praying for all this information to get out there and to be shared. So that's the biggest thing why I really grasp onto this story.

SPEAKER_01

And the name of the cult again was called Yeah, so this is the House of Prayer cult. Yes, basically. That's what they called the cult.

SPEAKER_03

Okay, yeah, and I kind of lean more toward Anna. There's a lot of House of Prayers.

SPEAKER_01

Anna Young, House of Prayer.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, so I'm just gonna put you know, House of Prayer cult or something. I don't know how I'm gonna name this shit. So I'm not even gonna play a band at the end of this because I don't think I did a great job either way.

SPEAKER_01

You did a great job, but uh, so if this is your first listen to us, I said this in a couple episodes ago. Um, I think it was in our Ed Kemper episode where Jesse was actually wanting to forward this to me and decided to just go ahead and watch this shit. And I was like, okay, well, you didn't forward it to me. You deep you deep dove yourself. So this is what this one's on you. So we decided to make it a bonus episode. I think you did an amazing job. Yeah. And you broke me. You made me cry.

SPEAKER_03

You did cry a little bit. I believe I didn't mean to make you, but it's a good one.

SPEAKER_01

No, this is sad.

SPEAKER_03

There's so much that we didn't talk about. About trapdoors and things, you know, where they put them in underneath the house. All the stuff. So is there a documentaries down? When you watch Joy walk into the house and she's like looking at some of the spots where they'd lock away children or remembering where a little girl sat there and jumped until she passed out and fell. You know, she just like it it was breaking her down to walk back into that building. Now it was just a house for sale on Zillow. And I was like, why am I fighting this? And I was like, let's go, Lindsay. No, let's not.

SPEAKER_01

Like I said, I could firsthand attest to not knowing anything about this and driving down the street where all this or the road that all this took place, the thickness and the horror that I felt in my veins, my arms, my ever, my everything. When I tell you I slept in Lizzie Borden's bedroom and didn't feel anything, didn't feel a fucking thing. But I felt the evil on that road. And kind of for a while till we got out and almost went back to Gainesville. I'll never look at McInopey the same. I'll never feel the same when I drive by it.

SPEAKER_03

You know, we felt it when we were in Gettysburg, but still wasn't this thing.

SPEAKER_01

It wasn't this, because Gettysburg was battle and war. This is torture and torment.

SPEAKER_03

This is horror and religious persecution. Persecution. Persecution.

SPEAKER_01

And let me be clear battle and war is horror in itself. But this is different. This is people that are supposed to be, in my opinion, what I was taught as a child, raised in a Christian home. These are supposed to be good people. They're supposed to be, it's supposed to be a clean energy.

SPEAKER_03

This positive inspiration, yeah. It's not. Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

There's nothing positive or clean here.

SPEAKER_03

No. No, they were using, like I said, old-time religious ways, like old testament type stuff.

SPEAKER_01

The Old Testament is dark.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. In the middle of, I mean, because they twisted it, dude. It was like, I ain't cut my hand off, but my penis was the thing that did it.

How Religion Gets Twisted Into Control

SPEAKER_01

So And that's why I don't understand why this is just my little small, I'm gonna do a teeny tiny soapbox here. I don't understand why people say you should live by the word because the word is fucking dark. So please help me understand that. And that's all I'm gonna say.

SPEAKER_03

Well, you got New Testament, Old Testament, and you have New Testament. It's all dark.

SPEAKER_01

I've read them. I was made to read them for hours a day.

SPEAKER_03

Now Testament. Nobody talks about Now Testament, and Now Testament is 2,000 years later. By God, we need to go to that type beliefs. There's just been way too many deaths. It would be just as dynamically diverse as Old Testament and New Testament if we talked about Now Testament. People have evolved, dude. Okay. What has come about in the last 2,000 years? A lot of horror. A big change in humanity, too.

SPEAKER_01

But I'm just saying, as far as religious persecution goes, the Christian faith always wants to act like they were persecuted. And yes, they were at a point in time. But how much persecution has been done in the name of Jesus? Millions over the last 220, 2,026 years.

SPEAKER_03

Billions of people have died over it. Billions.

SPEAKER_01

Exactly.

SPEAKER_03

Countless, countless people. Let's make it stop. The thing is, now testament, I do believe in a higher being, Lindsay. I do believe in something.

SPEAKER_01

Same. But I personally, if this, if he is real, if everything is real, we're gonna do the if, I don't believe that either parties or the three parties, the father, the son, or the Holy Spirit, I don't think they would co-sign to any of this.

SPEAKER_02

No.

SPEAKER_01

At all. It has just been twisted and perverted, and so many things wrong have gone like everything, it's just it's just went so sideways and and and all the ways over the years. It's just all been fucked up.

SPEAKER_03

Smaller forms of this happen in every church every Sunday. It's just not so horrific. It's not so uh physical, but there is an emotional and mental abuse it's plugged into you and beat into you. Fear, fear, fear. If you don't do this and you don't do it my way, and give me your money, or you're not going to heaven.

SPEAKER_01

And one of the ten commandments that were allegedly given to Moses say, Thou shalt not kill. And how many people have we talked about even in our little how what episode are we on? 70 something episodes. Half of them, half of the people that we talked about, maybe not half, but a lot of them have died in a religious nature, and it doesn't make any sense to me. Why? This doesn't, it doesn't, it doesn't add up, it doesn't make any sense.

SPEAKER_03

It creates mental instability in the middle of it. You got emotion, you're trying to figure something out in your mind and your heart and spiritualism to a better path for your your righteousness in an in an afterlife. You're trying to figure all this out, and something gets beat into you, and you start twisting it and you start moving it, and everything just doesn't make any sense. So you start following along with things that you might think that make sense because it's charismatic, and then it just changes into something horrific. Happens a lot.

SPEAKER_01

And our true crime aficionados out there that are are maybe listening. Um, if you know and have listened to as many thousands of hours as I have, pay attention because cults are really a rampant when it's post-war time. So we're in a war right now. So make sure. Now it's nothing like Vietnam, it's nothing like World War I, World War II, as as far as we are right now.

SPEAKER_03

Like we're at war again. Some of the pop singers are back again. Brittany's doing her things again. You know, things are happening, you know. So it's we're back in the 90s.

SPEAKER_01

It was the 90s. But at the same time, this was in the 80s when this was predominant. And that's post-Vietnam. People are still searching for answers. You got a lot of people coming off of psychedelics and heavy drugs and things like that. And then you got searching.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, Mikinopia is small. It's a story. So small. I mean, what what did they form? What was the movie that they filmed there? The uh Doc Holiday. Doc Holiday, yeah. So, I mean, that that was the biggest thing that ever happened.

SPEAKER_01

And Mickenopey's a cute little town with cute little antique stores and shit like that.

SPEAKER_03

Visit, I do not suggest actually trying to go to this.

SPEAKER_01

The antique part that I have been to before didn't have this energy as what you took me to. Right. That was a whole different energy. Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. Do not visit this place. Don't go check it out. Is ghost hunters would love this place. They would.

SPEAKER_01

They would, yeah.

SPEAKER_03

I've never felt this, and I'm not a clairvoyant by no means or nothing.

Resources Plugs And Goodbye

SPEAKER_01

See me neither. I do feel energy, and I see it off of the energy. I don't declare to be any kind of, like you said, clairvoyant, psychic, anything like that. But I do feel energy, good and bad, mute uh neutral things like that, you know.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, but uh, and I wasn't portraying anything when we're let's just stop by real quick and take a quick picture and then we'll go to the rest of her day. That's all I said to Lindsay, and that was it. It was horrible. It was horrible. Could not go through with it. But anyhow, Lindsay, thank you for giving me the opportunity to share this. Uh, hope I did a great job. And you did. We'll see you guys later on down the road. We got more coming for you. Lindsay has a story she's gonna break me with very soon. Like tomorrow. Yeah. Yeah. And uh Lindsay wants to say, uh, we love you so much. Go ahead and say it.

SPEAKER_01

And we're gonna do our plugs really fast before I say the words. Okay. Uh, so we are main website, drinkabout something.site on Instagram. We are drinkabout something. On um, if you want to send us an email, hit us up at drinkaboutsomething pod at gmail.com. On TikTok, we are drinkabout something pod underscore Lindsay. And where are we at on YouTube?

SPEAKER_03

Just type in Gen Z, J-E-N-D-S-E-Y, and you can come party with us. You can find videos and all kind of cool stuff. Lindsay, thank you so much. And you gotta say it now.

SPEAKER_01

You gotta say it's I'm gonna say it now because we got a lot more recording to do today. I love you, we love you so much.

SPEAKER_03

And I get to say the nobody says the B word better than I say the B word. Say the B word.

SPEAKER_01

Bye. Bye.
