0:00 | 52:30

A man steps out from behind a bedroom door wearing yellow dish gloves and raises a claw hammer. Susan Kuhnhausen, a 51-year-old ER nurse in Portland, Oregon, has seconds to decide whether she becomes a headline or a survivor. What happens next is one of the most gripping true crime survivor stories we’ve ever covered, and it’s a raw reminder that the most dangerous moment in a breakup can be the moment you finally choose freedom.

We walk through Susan’s life leading up to the attack, from her bold 1980s personal ad to the slow reveal that her marriage is built on control, resentment, and a partner who wants a small life on her dime. Then we break down the fight itself, how Susan uses training and instinct to stay alive, and why her decision to leave evidence matters as much as her decision to keep swinging.

After the emergency is over, the case turns into a chilling conspiracy to commit murder, with clues that connect the attacker back to Susan’s ex and a motive tied to money, life insurance, and a paid-off house. We also talk about the reality of living in fear after you survive and the practical steps Susan takes to protect herself. To close out, we shake off the Rockville blues with our music feature: Wild Plains and their track “Say My Name,” because sometimes the best way to exhale after heavy true crime is to turn the volume up.

If this story hits you, share it with someone who needs a reminder to never give up, then subscribe and leave a review so more listeners can find the show. What part of Susan’s fight stayed with you the most?

AS ALWAYS D-A-S

Drinks, Rockville, And Old Icons

SPEAKER_03

Hey Jesse.

SPEAKER_00

Hey Lindsay.

SPEAKER_03

What are you having to drink over there?

SPEAKER_00

I have uh there's a peach, peach, and a peach that I have over here. And then we also talked about having like um what was it, a mint? No, it was a it was a Singapore sling. We were Singapore slinging.

SPEAKER_03

But we didn't get any of the ingredients. No. We didn't. And so what should what did you do instead?

SPEAKER_00

So I bought a uh pre-mixed um lemon drop. Lemon drop. And you got a Manhattan over there too, but you had that last night, didn't you? Yeah, Manhattan last night. But I'm doing a lemon drop, but and I had Landon, because now he's 21. I had him mix it up.

SPEAKER_03

And he he made it like a dirty one, like with a little uh heavy cream in there and some ice.

SPEAKER_00

What are you drinking, Lenny?

SPEAKER_03

I've got a double watermelon Vista Bay with watermelon uh Celsius.

SPEAKER_00

I'm breathing heavy while I'm doing this. It's so good. So weird. This is sensual, yes. So are you ready for a story today? No, because last uh the last time we talked on here about a story story, it wasn't like really, really bad. It was pretty bad though. It was pretty bad.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

And all the things that we keep seeing, because now it's the loudest month. Yeah. So Rockville starts off, and then you got Sonic Timples right now. Then it just keeps going. There's like Oh, and guess what?

SPEAKER_03

They've got weather problems too. So shut up all you motherfuckers complaining about the rain and when that Rockville should change to this month and that month. I even saw somebody say that it should be changed to February. Bitch, I camp and I don't want to freeze all night. It is perfect. Yeah, I didn't mind it.

SPEAKER_00

I mean, was it once every four years? We have some bad weather.

SPEAKER_03

Yes, we have counted. This was our 11th year, and it's been every four years. The worst one was 2022 because it was so bad. Like all the headliners got canceled like every night.

SPEAKER_00

Right. So take so check out our uh Drunk About Something episode where we recap all that.

SPEAKER_03

And then the one before that, we were at Rockville. Yes, our Orange Lot story about Randy Bly.

SPEAKER_00

That was really cool. And he shaved his head. Oh, he did. We talked about that.

SPEAKER_03

What happened was is he so he sh he gave a shout out to a cancer patient during the set that he played at Rockville. And then later on, when I was, you know, scrolling and stuff, and my algorithm right now is like all Rockville. DWP 100. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

And um so she shaved his head backstage right before the set.

SPEAKER_00

And she was like, I thought he was kidding. He's like, no, I got my pull person. Yeah. I reshared that one. It was really cute. Like, real. That guy is a real humanitarian, like just real humanitarian. Absolutely. Anyhow, I'm excited about this one. Yes, Lindsay. And it is actually Friday. So happy Friday, everybody. Here we go. Yes. Party on guards. Party on win. We are not worthy. We didn't even watch Al. What? We didn't go to the stage. We still watch it. Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Sorry for that little cough there. Couldn't hold it back.

SPEAKER_00

So I mean, we've seen Alice Cooper at the stage twice. Yeah. Got his beheading and the whole thing. But when he plays Frankenstein, isn't that like Wayne's World on 10?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. Feeding my Frankenstein. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

And that girl guitar player that he has with her now, with him now.

SPEAKER_01

He's got two.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, they're shredding it. Dude, really on fire. If you get a chance to check out an old metal icon, there's some still around, so go check them out before they're gone, right? Yeah. Oh.

SPEAKER_03

Get on. Yeah, don't delay. Cause time waits for nobody. But hey, I have a question for you.

Feeling Old By Door Math

SPEAKER_00

For me? Uh-huh. Oh, oh, that's the same question you always ask me.

SPEAKER_03

That's what made you feel old this week. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

You keep coming at me. Okay, so I did some math, okay? It worked. I did some math. Years ago, Lindsay, years ago, we put a counter on how many times the door to my parts room opens. It's anywhere from three to seven hundred times a day. So I averaged like 500, right? Then I average the years that I've sat there and did my job. I've watched that door open and close over 3.5 million times. That made me feel old. Just a door. A door made me feel old. Isn't that weird? Right? But that's some real shit. That's some real shit. That's like an easy average right there. Easy averaging. Did all the math. Like kind of just kept it in the middle-ish. 3.5 million.

SPEAKER_03

So we've been in this house 12 years. I wonder how many times these motherfucking doors have opened and closed with four boys. I know, but I'm just saying. I'm just saying it's probably been a lot.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, it's every at least every minute that door opens at my work. Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Oh, I'm sure.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. So what made you feel old Lindsay?

SPEAKER_03

Nothing. I felt young this week because, number one, at Rockville, we outpartied both our 21-year-old. Well, our 21-year-old child and nephew.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, we thought they were going to go stupid ham. And they didn't.

SPEAKER_03

They went to sleep before us every night. And then I didn't feel like death all week. It was a little bit. It was a little a little. I died a little. I mean, I was a little bit worn out. But the last two years, I have really, I was beat down the week after. But this year, I was not that bad. It wasn't as bad as it has been.

SPEAKER_00

So I'm like, Yeah, I mean, we had a little funk, whatever the cold and the and the But you and Landon have gotten it worse than me.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

I mean, I I did feel a little bit, and I got the blues still. Oh, yeah. You know, the Rockville blues.

SPEAKER_03

And uh last night I broke out into tears because um, but well, by the time this episode is out, it is the anniversary of Chris Cornell's death.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

So that didn't come upon me because the last two years that was like heavy on my mind. And um, but I didn't think about it till last night, till uh when Silas was playing, Doesn't Remind Me. And at the very end of the song, it hit me. I'm like, oh my god, it's almost that time.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, out of nowhere. Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Burst it into tears.

SPEAKER_00

Nothing made you feel old. That's that's congratulations.

SPEAKER_03

I know. Hey, I get I hey, I gotta have I gotta take my wins where I can get them at 43. I didn't feel old physically though.

SPEAKER_00

I feel old by just a door, so that's weird, but it counts.

SPEAKER_03

But that's a lot. That's a lot 3.5 million times.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. Oof. A little quick math there. Lindsay, you have stories.

Meet Susan Kuhnhausen

SPEAKER_03

I do. So today we are drinking about an incredible woman named Susan Kuhnhausen. Now, she was the daughter of an Air Force cook and a stay-at-home mom. And her parents, they divorced when she was around eight-ish. So she moved around a lot, living in Colorado, Arizona, Nevada, just all over the place because of her father's job. And she would go back and forth between her parents' house. Okay. She grew up with chaos, but still graduated high school and then on to nursing school and became an RN and moved to Coos Bay, Oregon in the early 80s, and then moved to Portland, where she would stay. That was beautiful. So beautiful in Portland. It is. So in 1988, Susan was 33. She was single, living her best life, loving her career, but she felt she needed, it was it was time for some love in her life. So she took out a personal ad in the classified section. You remember those? In all the wrong places, looking for love. So many faces. Well, uh, for our younger listeners, uh, this was the tender of the 80s and 90s, and maybe even early 2000s. I'm not sure. So you would put out an ad in the paper, uh, kind of describing yourself, and you would hope for someone with your same interests to reach out. And then you would go on dates and, you know, yada yada. See where it took you. Well, her ad read single white female, something different. 33, overweight, but not over life. Yes, queen. And seeks single male who wants more out of a relationship than just slender. Love you. I love you, Susan. I love Susan. It takes a lot of courage. Yes, it does. And this is the 80s, too, where uh being on the thicker side of life wasn't as accepted as it is now.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, yeah. They were still doing the the skinny, skinny Barbie stuff. Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

The fucking Weight Watchers all the time, the cottage cheese diet, the cabbage soup diet, Jane Fonda workouts. Jesus. I remember those.

SPEAKER_00

The Motley Crew diet.

SPEAKER_03

Where you wait, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. Damn sure was.

SPEAKER_03

And what was those over-the-counter things you could buy? Like what were they called?

SPEAKER_00

The White Crosses and the White Crosses. And all the girls had those. Oh my god. All the girls had flat asses back then.

SPEAKER_03

You took those. You would get through the day. Like I would take them before I went to work. But by the time I would get off in the afternoon, crash out on the couch. As soon as I would get off work, just 3:30 p.m.

SPEAKER_00

I feel like like where we're at right now, everybody can be whatever they want to be. Yeah, absolutely. I really love that.

SPEAKER_03

Just be, you know, I mean, we encourage being healthy for sure. Healthy. But guess what? I mean, I'm 43, I'm overweight. But guess what? I work out pretty much every day of my life and have done that consistently for the last five years. And then I've always been, since I became an adult, I've been pretty I work out. Yeah, active.

SPEAKER_00

I mean, where physically, where you're looking for like real justification, go to a festival.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. And then come back and be like, I still, I'm still kicking ass. I'm still good. You're good. You're good. Yeah, we can climb that mountain still, Lindsay. Absolutely. Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. And I eat pretty healthy. I've we've really been on a cleaner eating journey for the last five years as well. Like we used to end the night with McDonald's Sundays or ice cream of some sort. We haven't done that in years. Yeah. So I mean, we're we're healthy. We're just thick.

SPEAKER_00

I stray a little bit there. Yeah, you talked.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, I'm I'm still on Chesse about his health journey, but you know, he'll get there. When he gets a bad physical, he'll be like, oh shit. But, anyways, so Mike Kuhnhausen responds to her ad and says that he was a 39-year-old divorced white male and he enjoyed being in nature, like wandering the caves at Mount St. Helen and walking on the beach at sunset. He enjoys long walks on the beach. Isn't that like the typical shit? Yeah. Well, in January of 88, Mike and Susan began talking on the phone, and Susan learned that he was adopted as a newborn and he had been in, he had served uh in the Vietnam War. Now, he kind of lied like right off the rip and said that he had seen combat. But I've heard from a couple of other sources that it was actually found out later on that he was a switchboard operator.

SPEAKER_00

But if he's in a battlefield, I guess it counts, right? I don't know.

SPEAKER_03

I don't know. But he would use the Vietnam thing to kind of excuse some behavior down the road. So anyway, now she wouldn't know about all that for a long time. And they ended up talking on the phone for around 150 hours, and then they meet and they go on a date feeding ducks and squirrels, and then they went on more dates where they did hikes and all kinds of stuff nature-related, you know. Cool stuff. Cool shit. And then uh, not I think it was they had been together like right at a year, and they went to Reno and eloped.

Marriage Cracks And Control Games

SPEAKER_03

Now, Susan said at first she felt like she had gotten a great deal on a used car, like everything was amazing. But as time went on and the honeymoon phase wore off, um, instead of being awesome nature guy, like you know, he claimed to have been, those those things started ending pretty quickly. And he was actually like a chain smoker who drank way too many Diet Cokes and he liked to burp all the time.

SPEAKER_00

Real loud, like like disgusting. And and when sitting on the couch, just beer gut and hanging out.

SPEAKER_03

She said that, you know, when she would try to kiss him, he would burp in her fucking face. That is so disgusting. There's nothing cute, sexy. That is a that is a turn off.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, it's really quick to lose the luster right now, isn't it? Yeah. All the sheen just goes away right then. Blink, you're done. You're like, uh, I'm not coming back for this.

SPEAKER_03

Like if you're joking around on the couch and you're burping and farting, whatever. But you know, if you're your your partner's trying to be sensual and and want to give you a kiss and you're just like in her face, that's fucking gross. Yeah. Yeah. Learn read the room, Mike. Read the room.

SPEAKER_00

Read the damn room.

SPEAKER_03

He also he just kind of becomes like a Debbie Downer all the time. He's she's like outgoing and spry, and you know, she lights up a fucking room, and he's just like, and then he becomes possessive and controlling about money. And this is something that I do not understand, and I will never understand. Why is it when the woman is bringing home the fucking bacon and the dude's just bringing home the loaf of bread? How the fuck does he think he's got any kind of say in what she spends her money on?

SPEAKER_00

No, you have no clout. No clout. Yeah, you don't you don't need to speak. You're not allowed, you're not part of the cool, the cool club.

SPEAKER_03

No, and that's something you and I have never done. Like, we make about the same amount of money, and we have never, ever said anything to each other about our spending.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, exactly. Like, I never have held any of that over top of anything because I understand that, you know, you have a home, there's workability there. We all need to put our stuff together and build together. And we've done a great job doing that. So I don't want to hold that back or hold anything over anybody.

SPEAKER_03

No, and then I mean, you know, I brought three kids into the rail relationship who constantly needed clothes and shoes and toiletries and stuff for school, you know, just it's a constant thing. And, you know, that has slowed down a lot now because we just have one. And now with him being homeschooled, like we just buy that shit when we need it. We don't have to go spend $200, you know, at one time, you know, for the start of the school year on supplies and then another grand on shoes. We just buy it now when he needs it. And he needs, he wants or needs for nothing at all.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, no, he's good to go. And we're saving a lot of money doing all that. Yes.

SPEAKER_03

So, you know, Mike, he would get mad over Susan what what they spent at the movies, but yet he would buy really expensive sports memorabilia. Like he started like a whole collection that he would keep in the basement, and he would just go in the basement and just like pour over it for hours. And that's expensive, but he justified it as an investment.

SPEAKER_00

It's my 1967 Sammy Sosa. Right. I got it over here on the wall. And this here's gonna be worth $10,000 one day. Exactly. Tell you what, it's gonna be a golly whopper.

SPEAKER_03

Now, you know, he wasn't he wasn't abusive or a cheater. Uh, he just wasn't someone that wanted a lot out of life. I mean, his actual motto was Life is a shit sandwich, and every day you take a bite until you die.

SPEAKER_00

Blah. Come on, brand the broken over here. Leave it alone, man. Come on.

SPEAKER_03

Now, like I said, uh Susan was a successful uh registered nurse, and Mike worked uh as a janitorial supervisor for an adult video entertainment company.

SPEAKER_00

So he's just That's where he got the long walks on the beach from Hustler Magazine.

SPEAKER_03

I enjoy long walks on the beach.

SPEAKER_00

Yes. Yeah, you got like the the centerfold and then the little caption at the bottom. Yeah, that's the same caption at the bottom.

SPEAKER_03

It's the same caption in like every fucking personal ad ever. Enjoys long walks.

SPEAKER_00

All the Playboys, all the yeah, so this makes sense now. Yes. He's in the realm of just, but he's a lot of selfish, you know.

SPEAKER_03

And like I said, we're not downing anybody's job. You know, everybody, every place needs a janitor, and it's work is work. But don't be trying to hold my girl Susan back from going to the movies when she has a substantially higher paying career. But anyway, we're gonna move on.

SPEAKER_00

She's looking for a glow up and somebody to to to settle down with and just be happy. I mean, he's just he showed up fake. Yes, yeah, yeah. He's a mascot counterfeit. Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

And what's crazy is he was still kind of bitter about his previous divorce and would obsess over being a failure, and was sure that Susan was just gonna leave him at any time. But Susan stuck it out for 17 years. Blah Mike. Wonderful Susan and Blah Mike.

SPEAKER_00

So now she's in her upper 40s now. Oh, yeah.

SPEAKER_03

So, oh, 50s. So yeah, because they met when she was 33 and he was 39.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, so now there's just, oh man, come on. You that's you want your best times in this area. Right. I want our best times in our area right here.

SPEAKER_03

Right. We're living it up as much as we can. Living it up. And have been since we met. Well, because you were held back. You were held back from a lot in your previous relationship. I was held back a lot being a single mom of three small kids. You know, I had to, uh, they were first, and I did what I could when I could.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I feel like when you when you see, and it we've been together forever now. So when you see me light up in my real realm of glow party at Rockville type situation, whatever, you see me, you're like, okay, this is Jesse in his element where he is fully just himself. And that's where I like to get to. Not all the time, because I don't try to be selfish and try to stay in that realm.

SPEAKER_03

But well, yeah, make sure you listen to uh the recap because we're gonna tell we we talk a lot about that little night.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, for sure. Yeah, we had a time. There's gonna be videos and footage and and proof and things.

SPEAKER_03

It's gonna come out. That's gonna come out, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

So I mean, and then I see you doing your glow up stuff, and I'm letting you do your stuff, and we we we bounce off of that and try to keep that a healthy conduit for a relationship. You know, we we want to we want to have that balance, and we also want to give ourselves that space where you know you can do you, and you I can do me, and and we're just we're trying to find those pockets where we really feel like we're our best, and then I'm sure you sit back and kind of bask in my goofiness and doing whatever, and just the same as you. Like I told you, I was like, Lindsay, you are the funniest person I've ever known. And you're like, But you don't ever laugh at my jokes. I'm like, but inside, like all the time, constantly, you're killing it, and I love it, you know.

SPEAKER_03

Thank you, thank you.

Separation Leads To A Setup

SPEAKER_03

So in 2006, she made the decision to make Mike move out and you know, separation and then uh follow up with divorce. So he moved in with his dad in his 50s, so yeah, he wasn't shit without her. I mean, honestly. So Pops is up in the 70s, right? Yeah, gotta be, you know, 70s possibly, 80s. We don't yeah. So Susan at this time, 2006, was 51, working as an ER nurse. She'd been doing it for 30 years, been amazing, okay? On September 6th, she was feeling kind of shitty after work, you know. She's going through a divorce, going through a separation. She's realized she's pretty much lost the last 17 years of her life to this law human.

SPEAKER_00

She's not gonna turn into like an Aunt Lydia or something.

SPEAKER_03

No, no, no, no.

SPEAKER_00

I mean, what's gonna be what's gonna happen? There's a lot of people. Let me go.

SPEAKER_03

Lindsay, now I'm now just just know, just go ahead and clock. Susan is the fucking tits. Just just know that, okay. Okay, but I have to Okay. Yeah, okay. So on the way home from work that day, this was September 6th, 2006, she stops on the way home to to the salon to get a little pamper, get her hair done. She just wants to feel nice.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

So she gets home around 7:30 that night. She goes in uh to her little mud room, and she saw that Mike had left a note on the microwave. And this is what she thought was going to be an amicable divorce. And he still had full access to the house. So he left her a little note saying that he hadn't been able to sleep and just wanted to get away, and he was going to the beach and would see her later on that week. So I'm guessing like to maybe meet up and get Some more of his shit, you know, whatever. So then she goes into the kitchen, she goes back out and is going through her mail, then goes back

The Hammer Attack And The Fight

SPEAKER_03

in, and a man appears from behind the bedroom door wearing a tan ball cap and yellow dish gloves.

SPEAKER_00

Not good.

SPEAKER_03

She screams at him, who are you and what do you want? And he just starts coming after Susan with a fucking claw hammer.

SPEAKER_00

Fucking A Lindsay, come on, dude. I didn't see this one.

SPEAKER_03

But Susan, like I said, was an ER nurse and she had been trained in self-defense. Now he hits her in the head like almost immediately, really hard, like in the temple. But she keeps fighting. She didn't run from him. What she does was she actually like crowds him to make it harder for his blows to like affect her.

SPEAKER_00

Slows the inertia, yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Right. And then she starts biting him because she says that if it ends today, she wanted it to be known that she put up a fight. She wanted it to be known. Then they both fall to the floor, and she is desperately trying to get the weapon out of his hands. And he even stops and says to her, You're strong. Like she don't know who this fucker is, right? And that just gave her even more rage because it was then when she realized that this wasn't a random attack or robbery. He was here specifically for her.

SPEAKER_00

Like a hitman.

SPEAKER_03

Right. What the fuck? And she gets the hammer from him. She gets the hammer from him and just starts swinging it at his head with the claw side out. That was something her dad taught her like many moons ago. So she starts going at him, but he gets it back from her. So Susan then starts, she goes in for his throat and starts choking him and screaming at him, who sent you? But of course, he doesn't answer. So she's still squeezing. But it starts to like freak her out when he starts turning blue because she's a nurse. She saves lives. She doesn't take people out. So she lets go. And she tried to run at this point, but he caught up with her and punched her in the fucking face, splitting her lip, and then punches her again and she falls to the floor. She looks up and he's just about to swing down the hammer. And somehow, like she doesn't even know how. She's like, motherfucker, I'm not gonna die today. She pulls his ass to the floor and starts biting and biting and biting. She even bit his fucking dick through his shorts. Lindsay! Yes, Susan! Lindsay. And I mean, she was doing anything she could to keep him down and also. Yeah. And she also had like the good sense that she was gonna leave behind evidence on his body. And while she's biting, she's going through his pockets to see if she could get his wallet to throw under a piece of furniture. That way, if it did not end well, evidence is here.

SPEAKER_00

Evidence is here. It's in my mouth, you know, it's everywhere. Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Susan then gets on top of this man and pins him down and gets him into a chokehold. Now she's like, okay, I'm winning this fight, and then screams at him, tell me who sent you, and I'll get you a fucking ambulance.

SPEAKER_00

Lindsay, you're talking about right now. Mm-mm-mm. We're waiting a minute right now. Okay. You're talking about the strongest woman I've ever seen in a crime victim. She is not.

SPEAKER_03

She is just like 51-year-old, and she's so petite. Like, I want you to watch a little documentary.

SPEAKER_00

She owned the situation at the point she okay. She was like fully attacked, fully surprised. She's been hit in the fucking temple. To the point to where she had, she could have taken this dude all the way out and gave him life back. Dude kept coming. But she's still, dude. She's got him down now, okay? Oh, when I get you in the squared circle. Dude, this is the baddest, this is the most amazing story so far of survivalism. Like, she is just reaching from every bit of all that and turning into the incredible Hulk right now. I'm loving it, but at the same time, I'm horrified because it's fucking horrible, Lindsay.

SPEAKER_03

So, you know, like the nurse in her had to be the one saying, if you say, Who fucking sent you? I'll get you. And anyway, she wanted to know who why the fuck are you in my house, bro? He would not answer her, and he just starts growling in her face. So she kept strangling him until he went limp. She grabs the hammer from him and runs to her neighbor's house and calls 911. When the ambulance and the police arrive, they see that Susan's attacker is dead. She took his ass out.

SPEAKER_00

Fist bump, Lindsay. Yes. These are these are the things that a lot of women need to go through. They need to hear this, they need to go through that training, fist bump again. And then they need to really realize never give up. Don't give up. Never give up, fist bump again. And then we're gonna like keep on fist bumping over this for the rest of our lives because I am so inspired right now. Because there's a lot of women that feel like that they can just, they're just they're victims over this and they're just gonna give in and then give up. Don't never give up. Never. This is a fucking huge inspiration. They fist bump one more time. Fuck Lindley.

SPEAKER_03

This is fucking oh my god. So I'm clouded, man.

SPEAKER_00

I know, I know. Stop. Oh I got the lashes on. I don't want to cry. Oh, this is really cool. Fist bump one more time. Go ahead and you can

The Clues That Point To Mike

SPEAKER_00

talk more. Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Alright, so this fucker's name was Ed Hathy. And it did bother Susan so much because she's so amazing that she took this man out. Now she gets taken to the hospital that she works at, and they're like, holy shit. Now, Mike, he's sitting over at the beach. He turns on the news and sees that something has happened at his previous residence. And it, I mean, it's breaking news. But the news is kind of vague on what happened there. So over at the hospital, Susan has started having suspicions that Mike may have had something to do with this. So she tells all her co-workers and friends that if Mike calls, don't tell him I'm here. Now he did, in fact, call one of her friends and the hospital where she was. But they were like, I don't know where Susan is. Very suspicious here.

SPEAKER_00

Motherfucker, yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Now, a few days later, Susan's released, and her and her friend go back to her house to get a few things because it's now a crime scene, so she couldn't stay there. Now her friend goes down to the basement and sees a backpack that doesn't belong to Susan or Mike, and even the police missed this. Inside was diabetes medication, a day planner, Hershey syrup, and a couple of hundred bucks. Diabetes. And inside the day planner, there was a note that said, call Mike, with Mike's new phone number written down.

SPEAKER_00

Chu fucking ching.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. Yeah. Come to find out, Ed was an employee of Mike's at the adult video place. He was a crackhead and had already been to prison for arranging the murder of his ex-girlfriend, who did not survive.

SPEAKER_00

Fuck. Yeah. He planted that shit in his head too. He was like, well, I'll just take that beer down.

SPEAKER_03

Now, two days later, they are out to find Mike and discover that Mike has left a suicide note at his father's house and had gone on the run. But they found him and he had uh went to a psychiatric center where he said he was going to check himself in because he had nothing left to live for anymore. Now they did allow this evaluation to go through, but when it was over, they arrested his ass for conspiracy to murder. And they found out Ed wasn't the only one he had tried to hire to kill Susan. Oh shit. There was like three more. But they all said, absolutely not. What a disgusting ass fucking human being. Disgusting human being.

SPEAKER_00

Hey, uh, take out my wife. I'll give you my Sammy Sosa baseball.

SPEAKER_03

Right.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. I got a Hank Aaron signed jersey over here. We'll we'll do some trading and swapping here.

SPEAKER_03

So the reason that Mike wanted to take out Susan was because he had lost his job prior to the separation. Yeah. And he knew that she changed her beneficiary from him to her brother on the life insurance policy. But the house, their house was paid off, and if Susan died, that house would be his and it was worth about $300,000. So that would have solved all his little problems. All his very minute blah of a human being problems.

SPEAKER_00

All that for that, you piece of shit. Right, you piece of shit. They should turn her fucking loose on his ass, too. She'd get him too. But what an inspiration she is.

Courtroom Fallout And Staying Safe

SPEAKER_00

Wow.

SPEAKER_03

Well, a couple more witnesses come forward, and Mike was fucked. He gets sentenced to not enough, uh, 10 years, and when she was able to face him in court, she says to him, You were willing for me to share your small, miserable life until death did we part. The sooner the better, it turns out, huh? She said, I am damaged by what you have done to me. Damaged, but not destroyed. Like I said, ten years is not that long. Fuck no. And Susan still had to live in fear that this could possibly happen again. So she took some precautions. She sued him for restitution in the amount of a million dollars to make sure that he would never have any money to be able to hire anyone else to come after her. Then she moved to a new house that was kind of out of the way. She stayed in the same city, but it was still like a more private residence, undisclosed location.

SPEAKER_00

For sure. He should have got a fucking centerfold too, man. He should have got him a penthouse centerfold of like what long walks on the beach and trying to take out my wife when she leaves me. Right? Fuck Mike. Yeah, you old bastard.

SPEAKER_03

Now she uh she puts gravel all around her house to be able to hear footsteps and vehicles approaching. This is that is very smart. I don't even know if I would ever think about that. She learned how to use a gun. I mean, we already knew she could whoop some ass, but she learned how to use a gun. Uh, she changed her to and from work routines and was always looking over her shoulder. Now, Mike was scheduled to be released early on September 14th. You son of a bitch. Son of a bitch. Uh, 2014. September 14th is my birthday, by the way. And fuck that guy. Yeah. But he died. He died. He died. He died in June of that same year of prostate cancer. He died. He died. So Susan did not have to live in fear anymore. Oh, fist bump again. Fist bump again. Yeah. She retired that same year.

Survivor Lessons And Rockville Blues

SPEAKER_03

Fuck yeah. And she celebrates her survival with a party every single year.

SPEAKER_00

On your birthday. Yes. You think?

SPEAKER_03

Well, I don't know.

SPEAKER_00

I would.

SPEAKER_03

Well, this the it was September 6th, is when her attack happened. So close enough.

SPEAKER_00

But maybe she celebrates it on his release day.

SPEAKER_03

Well, no, he died in June. His release day was going to be September 14th.

SPEAKER_00

Okay, okay, okay, okay, okay. That would be cool, though. That would be uh iconic.

SPEAKER_03

Everybody around the world, give a round of applause for Susan.

SPEAKER_00

The amazing round of applauses. And Lindsay. You're part of this thing, Fist Bump. And thank you so much, Fist Bump. And I just wanted to say, this woman is amazing and Fist Bump. Yes.

SPEAKER_03

I had to throw a survivor story in. Yeah. This one just really made me happy.

SPEAKER_00

See, and then it was it was plant worthy. It really was. I'm fixing the turn.

SPEAKER_03

He was fixing a turn to the plant when I said, when I then I started.

SPEAKER_00

All of a sudden Hulkamania came out. You know, it was WrestleMania. It was amazing.

SPEAKER_03

She she just Susan is the tips. We love you, Susan. Yes. Yes. I hope you are living your absolute best life, girl. Survivor.

SPEAKER_00

Yes. Love that. We're gonna try to do the avenues and send it to her. That way she can hear our little story and our uh avenue of awareness globally. Yes. Because women do the things, man. Never give up when it comes to that situation. Never give up. And always keep something on you a little special for an asshole like him.

SPEAKER_03

Well, I have my little plans. Like I'm hardly ever alone in our house. Um, but when I have been, you know, before I I have I keep cleaner and then we have a detachable shower head. I'm gonna fucking spray your ass with some Clorox and drown you if you try to come at me in the shower. And I used to always um, because I have my headphones on when I'm cleaning and stuff like that, and like the vacuum. This fucking vacuum will take somebody out, and I can swing it.

SPEAKER_00

You're hitting everybody with a kitchen sink, dude. I will destroy this house before you destroy me. No, when the kids, when the kids all get grown and out of the house, we'll probably keep a revolver by the door. Yeah. You know? I mean, but not now, but still, yeah, for sure. Especially when we get older, and we're not near as cool as as she is. No. Dude, Susan's are like one in a million, man. No, like you're painting this whole picture right now, and the whole the the struggle and everything going down, and she's biting and fighting. I'm like picting her being in control of the whole the whole situation.

SPEAKER_03

And I listened to an interview on YouTube with her describing it herself, and I was just like, yeah, Susan.

SPEAKER_00

So strong. So strong. So strong.

SPEAKER_03

But I'm happy that I got to surprise you with a survivor tale today. Yeah. I've been excited about it all week. I'm geeking right now.

SPEAKER_00

Like, I am really, I feel like this is just a sigh of relief and being able to share this. You know, there is this situation in true crime too. And I'm glad that the outcome was in favor of the victim. And I love that.

SPEAKER_03

Really amazing. Because it could have gone so much differently, but Susan refused to give up.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I believe she gave him life twice. She was like, I'll call an ambulance, or I'll quit because you're purple and I'll I'll give up. But I just need to know what the fuck is why is this happening, right? I'm in control. She was in control and I love it.

SPEAKER_03

And that just makes her one of like the most top humans of all humans, because I don't know if I would feel bad at all for and and it did, like it, it it aided her that she took a life because she had spent 30 years saving them.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, you know? All of our hopes and dreams are for her to not hold on to any animosity or any regret on any anything in that situation where she just completely lived happily ever after.

SPEAKER_03

Yes, girl.

SPEAKER_00

I know it's got a weigh on you, but I am so much stronger and I'm way a better woman. And she she she came up after that in full strength in amazingness, and that's just that's fucked Lindsay.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, I know.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, I love it. I love it. Just one more time, just one more time. Okay, boom, we blew that one up.

SPEAKER_03

Yes, I wanted us to have a happy story this week. I mean, it's terrible, but it's good at the same time. Terribly happy to get us through the rest of these Rockville blues and yeah, for sure.

SPEAKER_00

The Rockville blues. I haven't shook them all the way yet.

SPEAKER_03

And we've got we've got something to look forward to. We've got wage war at the end of the month. I'm so excited.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I think you have to have another good show after Rockville.

SPEAKER_03

You do, and we've kind of planned that the last few years. We have to have something to look forward to afterwards to shake shake them blues.

SPEAKER_00

And I'm gonna give myself about two months and I'll be back on stage.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

It's it's uh the the snowball is building. We're gonna be casting shadows once again. Well, who are you featuring this week?

Wild Plains Feature And Song Drop

SPEAKER_00

I have a band called Wild Plains. Wild Plains. Let me get my phone out. We have been a little bit off on uh on how we do our structure on bands and everything, but I'm gonna get back to right. But as of this one, it's an amazing male artist. And because I've been usually doing like female with female.

SPEAKER_03

Right, yeah, we kind of we kind of bit, but we yeah, we got it's okay. It's whatever. It's okay.

SPEAKER_00

This I mean, this band is worthy for sure. This song is called Say My Name, and it is so amazing, Lindsay.

SPEAKER_03

I'm excited.

Festival Side Quests And Music Nook

SPEAKER_03

Say my name. Hell yes. Wasn't that fun?

SPEAKER_00

Wild Plains, you guys are awesome. That was like perfect, too, actually, to have this on this situation, you know. Say my name, motherfucker, before I fucking take you out, dude. Out took you up out sent you. Took you up out of ghetto, motherfucker.

SPEAKER_03

So Wild Plains hails from New York. New York. We love New York. Fuck yeah. And uh so lead vocals is Chris Carmelo. And then we've got Andre Jevnik and Don Pryor. Yes. Three piece.

SPEAKER_00

Hot.

SPEAKER_03

Hot. They're hotness. They're good looking dudes, too. Can't it? Yeah, can't even lie. They're pretty. Look at them.

SPEAKER_00

Oh shit. They're gorgeous. Look at them. They're gorgeous. Check them out. Follow them if you're around the area. Go see them. Support them. Buy a t-shirt.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, well, if you guys end up on a DWP bill, we'll come see you. And we'll say your name. Yeah, we're we're hoping for quite a few of our bands that have been on our roster. We're gonna see you at a festival. I was talking to Jose Mangan about a royal wave.

SPEAKER_00

Yes, you sure were. That was really cool.

SPEAKER_03

At the pit.

SPEAKER_00

Was it the pit? Yeah. Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, it was the it was a little hidden nook that we found.

SPEAKER_00

It was an open VIP area, but it was for everybody.

SPEAKER_03

And it was a VIP area. They heavy poured uh Jesse's drinks and got him really fucking wasted. Yeah, and I was like, Lindsay, say my name.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, dude. It was so good. It was a cool spot. Now finally, it was day two. Found it on day two, I think it was. Three. Three. We found it on day three. Fuck. Yeah, because we goofbooted all day about that. And then we were just like, oh yeah, that's just a cool spot then, you know. Yeah. Find the cool spots when you go to festivals, right?

SPEAKER_03

Yes. They had like a little, they had the bar service, the American music experience. Oh, I went in there and shredded my fucking ass off. That was really I had a I had a fan, actually. Follow me on Facebook and can you see our whole album of uh pictures?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, when you walk into a music and you see a dude like wailing on guitar, and you're like, okay, I'm walking around and check out the because the music experience, like you can pick up a guitar and plug it in, play anything. Uh they've got turntables, all the shit. And this guy's like killing it over there on guitar. So I pick up a guitar and I sat down and then I started going ham. I don't know what the fuck I was playing, but that guy stopped what he was doing and came and checked me out and was clapping at the end. I'm like, what? No, don't say my name.

SPEAKER_03

And well, we also got to see interviews with Breaking Benjamin and Highly Suspect. Johnny first. Johnny Stevens. I love you, Johnny Stevens. Katie Babbs. Katie Babs was there.

SPEAKER_00

Of course, Jose's just goof booting around. I'm telling him about stuff, and you know, and handing him a little Gen Z card.

SPEAKER_03

I'm super pissed that I missed the Will Ramos fucking interview. So that would have been the that would have been the spot just to hang out all weekend. All weekend. Yeah. And it was dead in there. Thank God.

SPEAKER_00

That was nice. Yeah, a nice shade. Yeah. They were saying our name for sure. Love the wild plains, Lindsay. Love your story too.

SPEAKER_03

It wasn't wasn't it a good one? Um, yes. I was really happy to share that with you.

SPEAKER_00

I'm happy to hear it. I mean, I'm happy to share it.

SPEAKER_03

Well, I've heard this, I've heard the story about her almost five times now through different podcasters and even a TikToker that does like many true crime stories on his page. And I was like, I gotta share this story too. Jesse will fucking love it. Our listeners will love it. It's a good survivor tale. Susan is the tit. The tit.

SPEAKER_00

Lizzie, you're an infection because I've already found two true crime. Actually, I have three that I want to cover.

SPEAKER_03

Ooh, we got more Jesse stories coming.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, yeah. I'm excited. That'll be fun, right? I mean, I'm not excited because I'm I don't know. Well, I'm just excited. I like when it's good when it comes to like ink on paper and me reading such things. Like, I don't know. I'm just not my aesthetic, but you know you'll get there. But it's always fun actually to watch you do watch you do me. Yeah. Yeah, it's very cool. Yeah, you destroyed me with the last one you covered. Holy shit.

SPEAKER_03

That was the worst part of all of it. That was the worst part of all of it. Visiting the area. I have never felt such thick, negative energy in my life.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, not to plug my own story, but you can go back and check out the case. Yeah.

Where To Find Us Next

SPEAKER_03

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. Right? Because we will Fall River, man. Fall River. I know. And we met a dude in a jacuzzi one time that was like a paramedic, or no, he wasn't.

SPEAKER_03

Yes. He was a paramedic.

SPEAKER_00

In in Fall River.

SPEAKER_03

Wow. Just uh a couple months ago on our anniversary. Yeah. We met them. Wow. It is. I don't know. Is this like a sign that we need to like have a vacation home in Fall River? No, I don't like I don't like how they do their alcohol.

SPEAKER_00

No. You can't find it. You gotta go settler.

SPEAKER_03

You've got to go to the liquor store, even just to get seltzers or beer. Yeah you there is no there's nothing out of bodega. No, and they have bodegas on every corner. Every corner, but you gotta go to the liquor store.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. So that's different. Very New England different. Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. And um where else? Okay, so if you want to send us an email, we are drinkaboutsomething pod at gmail.com. If you want to follow us for our live feeds that we do on TikTok, it's drinkabout something pod underscore Lindsay. Have I covered everything?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. And if you feel like there's any avenues where we can reach out to survivors or it to anybody where we can get our platform out even better, hit us up because uh we're not scared to collaborate or have people on the podcast as well. So that's always fun. Thank you for so much for your support. We keep finding amazing fans. That's awesome.

SPEAKER_03

Yes. And yeah, and thank you to all of our new followers that we found at Rockville. We love you so much, and we can't wait to see you again. Hope to see you again next year or even at another festival down the road.

SPEAKER_00

Where were we at? We were like waiting for a band to play, and somebody ran by. I listen to your podcast, I love it. And I kept on walking. I was like, What? Yes.

SPEAKER_03

I know who that is. That's awesome. Well, we're yeah, we uh we're we're we talked about them on our recap. Yeah. So yes. That's so awesome. Make sure you go back and listen to that. And we do have quite the catalog to the point where we actually did a three-parter revisit of a case that we are very passionate about.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, we just did that recently. Re-release, our first re-release. That was really cool. Yes. Made it easy on me.

SPEAKER_03

And me, because I had a lot to do. Yeah, I gotta have like a week before Rockville and kind of a week after, like to just to have to gather everything, and then I have to wash and dry and ungather and collect ourselves back up. Yeah, just get resituated. Well, we did great.

SPEAKER_00

Yes, we did. Lindsay, I love you so much. I love you so much. Fans, I love you so much. Yes, listen to you. Wild Plains, I love you so much.

SPEAKER_00

That's a name we're always gonna say. We want to be friends. Yes. Definitely come over for the cookout. Stay for the tater salad. You want to be a golly quopper? For sure.

SPEAKER_03

That's an inside joke. But we love y'all so much. Uh, we'll see you next week for uh something new that Jesse has picked out of a bowl. Oh, yeah, that's happening again. Yeah. So yeah, you can go back and see. Yeah. Yes. Yes. And I'm excited. We're gonna sign off for now. We love you so much. Yes. Bye.
