Patty Hearst Recap And Where We Left Off

So here we are. We're still drinking about Patty Hearst.

So last week we talked about how Patty Hearst, granddaughter of William Randolph Hearst and daughter of Randy Hearst, was kidnapped from her Berkeley apartment where she lived with her fiancé Steve, who had been her teacher. And she was kidnapped by the SLA for the exchange of their comrades Joe Romero and Russell Little, who were doing time in San Quentin for the murder of Marcus Foster. But they had not actually pulled the trigger. So SLA members Linda Lean Perry, aka Fahiza, Donald DeFries, aka Sin Q Matume, and or actually Sin, that's what he goes by, and um Ms. Moon or Goya was her name. Oh Goya had actually been the ones to pull the trigger. They had also said that Randy Hearst must design a food distribution organization for people on government assistance, which Randy tried to do, but it was a mess. And he basically said that he wasn't gonna put any more money into it. And after 57 days of being blindfolded, emaciated, disoriented, and made to read revolutionary material and being told that the FBI was the enemy and that her parents weren't trying hard enough, Patty decided to join the SLA as Tanya and denounce her parents and her fiance, Steve, and says this on a recording that is broadcasted through all media outlets. Now, Patty was doing all of this out of survival as she feared this group because they were reckless and they were willing to die for their cause and had a shit ton of guns and a bunch of Pokemon cards. And by the way, this is going to be a three parter. Oh. Because my God, there's so much more to talk about.

Tanya, Recordings, And Stockholm Survival

So now Patty has seen the faces of all her kidnappers. She was quite surprised that only one, which was Sen Q, was actually black because this was a black militant revolutionary group. So she was very surprised to find that everybody else was very, very much white. Now the group takes a photo together with Patty, aka Tanya, and that is also sent out to the media, and they're standing in front of so I said in the last episode that it was a seven-headed serpent, it was seven-headed cobra. So, I mean, cobra is the serpent. Yeah, you know. So now most people, when this photo and her recording get out into the media, they're thinking that she is brainwashed and being forced into this. But a lot of people also think that she has now just crossed over by her own decision. And both are technically true because she is being forced and she did decide to get out. She actually had to get in. So Tanya was a name adopted as a tribute to Tamara Bunke, who was a communist revolutionary who fought alongside Shea Guevara in Bolivia in the 60s. So there was about five recorded messages total that were sent out. And some of them would also have Sin speaking, and uh, and he would have these long ass tirades just going on and on and on and on about the cause and you know, the fascist pigs and all that. So imagine, you know, that guy that's yelling at Forrest Gump when he ruins their Black Panther Party.

I mean, that is exactly what, and even in the movie, like Bing Ray's plays Sin Q, and it's just constant, just beating it down your throat. You know what I mean? Right. And I am all about, I'm all about people standing up for their beliefs. Do not get me wrong on that. Sin was just over the top. And he was also very misinformed on a lot of things he was standing up for, like murdering Marcus Foster.

So go back to episode one for that scenario. Sometimes um, Angela Atwood would speak, a lot of them would fought, be followed by Patty. Some of them would start out with Patty, you know, just a lot of messages, and a lot of them were very long. And most of these messages was actually written out by Sin and the rest of the LA. Like they all put took their part in it. So none of these messages were Patty's own words or thoughts. And a lot of them did say, I am not being brainwashed or held against my will. When she, I mean, she was in fact being held against her will. You know, she's now at the point of like a Stockholm syndrome where she feared them, but was kind of like adapting to their what they were doing. She was doing a long way. Right. And she would rewrite some of the messages to make them make more sense because she was, you know, she was a college student. She had a lot more knowledge in the grammar area where it was kind of some of them were just kind of a mess. And she was like, All right, let me let me edit this to make it sound better. I know I have to say these things, but can we, you know, can I edit it a little bit? But she was still made to read them. And Patty is also trying to convince the SLA that she is now all for them and believes in their cause. So the blindfold comes off, and Patty has now matched the faces to the voices and saw that her living conditions were very meager. This is an unfurnished apartment that nine people are living in. And like I said before, they're living off canned beans and shit.

Randy Hearst’s Search And Psychic Detours

So over on Randy's side, her father, he's still trying to get the FBI to be more persistent. Like he has said, and this this did kind of piss the SLA and Patty off a little bit because Randy said the financial things that they were trying to make him do was beyond what he could do. And the SLA didn't believe him. And I do say that in the previous episode, they think he's just swimming in money, and it wasn't, it's not like that.

So over, like I said, Randy, he's trying to get the FBI to actually uh get an ex CIA agent to go into the revolutionary uh revolutionary underground and promise them that they can all go to Cuba, where a lot of their beliefs came from. He felt like this would draw the SLA out. They get psychics involved to try and locate Patty. Like one Swami tried to reach Patty through talking to her shoe to get some answers.

You know what I mean? And they did have disguises, they did have disguises. Let's not forget. Oh, yeah. Well, let's not forget that at least three of the members of the SLA had been theater kids. So they they knew how to dress up and just be over-theatric.

Bank Robbery Plan To Prove Loyalty

lot. But after a few days of being unblindfolded, the SLA decided that they wanted to make a public appearance with Patty by robbing a bank. Now they did need money, uh, but this was always uh also going to be a way to show the public that Patty was indeed Tanya. Now robbery had actually always been how the SLA was surviving, by the way. They had participated in muggings, robbing stores, and houses, like they had already been doing this. This is how they were getting money. But before the bank plan, uh, they actually had talked about robbing a liquor store. And then Sin said, better yet, let's make it a bank, which they would all call the bakery because that's where the bread is. Oh yeah, they're a lot. And the rest of the gang was like, hell yeah, except Patty. And Sin tells Patty that this is now her time to prove to the group that she was in fact all in. Or they would kill her. He does tell her this. Right. Now, Angela Atwood or Galena, she would make disguises for herself, Nancy Ling Perry or Fahiza, and Bill Harris or Tico to go and shake out the bank that they would rob, not shank out, stake out the bank that they would rob. Now they did this by going out and looking like tourists and taking Polaroids of different banks and their surroundings. You know, because you have to have a swift getaway, you gotta know what bank's got a lot of traffic going by it. You gotta do the work. So they went go inside these banks and memorize the surroundings and later draw out diagrams for the group planning at the safe house. They would collectively decide on the Hibernia Bank, which was on or in the Sunset District of San Francisco. The president of this bank just happened to be the father of Patty's best friend.

But the SLA didn't know that, and she kept that detail to herself, but she was like, fuck, this is where I gotta make my debut as a member of you idiots. So she tried to convince Sin to let her be a part of the group that would be outside the getaway. But Sin was like, no girl, we want you on camera, want you armed, and you have to make a whole speech as we collect the money. And this terrified Patty even more because she's like, if I don't do this, the SLA is gonna kill me. And if I do do this, I might die by the hands of the police. The SLA team that would be on the inside of the bank was Patty, Sin, Ms. Moon, or Zoya, Fahiza, and Gabi. So I thought it was Gabby, but it's actually Gabi. Both teams would open fire at any time to avoid infiltration, or they would all die together as a unit. Patty was given a oh my god, let me see if I have this written right. An MI MI M1. M1, that's it. Yeah. M1 semi-automatic carbine with a sawed off barrel. And the other members had various machine guns and shotguns. This gun was fucking huge. I'm gonna show you a picture in a little bit of her holding it. Yeah, it's bigger than her.

Now Patty practiced her speech day and night to make it last no longer than 90 seconds, because that was what the group had practiced for for the entire robbery to be able to do.

Hibernia Bank Robbery And Fallout

So on April 15th, 1974, just 13 days after Patty had swore allegiance, they set out to Hibernia Bank. This was also the first time that Patty had been outside since her capture on February 4th. That's a lot.

They didn't practice this in the living room. Oh, they did. But she was like the one to kind of do that a lot.

So Sin, he takes over and he yells, This is a holdup. And the first motherfucker who doesn't lay down on the floor is gonna get shot in the head. Now at the same time, Patty then points her gun at the assistant manager and a couple of other employees. And Fahiza is kicking and screaming customers who weren't like reacting quick enough. And then Ms. Moon or Zoya, she jumps over the counter and starts collecting the cash. So now Patty is supposed to be shouting out her speech. And all that practicing she had done over and over and over did not work out. No. Because she was frozen in fear.

And all that she could get out was this is Tanya, Patricia Hurst. That's it. That's all she said. And then it was the 90 seconds were up. It was time to get the fuck out. Or the night, yeah, 90 seconds. And as they're leaving, a man who owned a liquor store walked in during the holdup just to make his deposit, as he always did. Now he read the room quickly and was trying to leave and get out as fast as he could. But Fahiza got him right in the buttocks.

They're walking around, they got their that's what I was trying to sing the other night, and I couldn't. I was like, I can't do it. It's part of the script.

So now the stories in the media about Patty said that, yep, she's conformed, and she was just as much a criminal as the SLA. So she just accepted that this was her new life. And if she stays, she says that if she stayed alive, she may somehow, by some miracle, get rescued one day. But she had to go along to get along until that miracle happened.

And this was supposed to force police and National Guard to invade the black neighborhoods, which would invoke rage in the black neighborhoods, and then the people would want to join the SLA because revolution. Revolution and the battlefield was gonna be LA, mostly in Compton and Watts neighborhoods. Fucking hell. Yeah. Over at the previous safe house, they had left out rotting food, which led to cockroaches, which led to tenant complaints, which led to their old safe house on Golden Gate Avenue being discovered. Which then led the police and the FBI one step closer to finding the group. Now, they also found one of the abandoned getaway cars from the robbery. And there was something in that one that led them to them. I can't remember what it was, but they're gonna leave behind evidence on another car that we're gonna talk about a little in a little bit. So this was all in the news, and the SLA was constantly watching the news or listening to the radio. So they go off to LA and each team is in a different vehicle. So Patty, Yolanda, and Tico are all in one together. Now, Patty is made to lay on the floor of the vehicle that they are in at this time. There's gonna be so many more. And she was right next to a big ass machine gun and would later on get scrutinized because why didn't she just pick that up and kill them and get away? Well, for the most part, if you're not a killer, you don't think like one. And why would you shoot the people driving you? Because then you're probably just gonna die.

So now we are in full cult mode, and it is time to start the revolution.

Mel’s Sporting Goods Chaos And Gunfire

So he sends Team Tico, Yolanda, and Patty to go out and get combat supplies at a store called Mel's Sporting Goods in Englewood. Tico and Yolanda go in the store, and Patty stays in the van, hidden down in the floor. Now they've got disguises on, but she was still very recognizable. I mean, she's pretty fucking hearsed. And her picture has been everywhere. They were gone for a very long time. Patty peeks up off the floorboard of the van and sees that Tico is on the ground while store clerks had hidden pinned, and Yolanda was also being detained and kicking and yelling. And they both look at Patty like, girl, you better help us. And in her mind, she thinks, oh my God, if I don't, Sin would kill her. And remember, she is being looked at as a criminal now and all the training she had and just lived and breathed all of this shit during her capture. It came out. She grabbed one of the big ass machine guns and shot in the air. So she had been instructed that if ever this ever happened, she was to shoot above her comrades' heads to try to bust up whatever. Yeah, to try to bust it all up.

So Tico, Yolanda, and Patty ditched the van and they hijack another car that actually died very quickly, and then another car, and then another car that uh a teenager was driven by a teenager, and he was just trying to get to his baseball game, and they actually hold him hostage.

Now, the group had been in such a hurry to switch cars that they left behind a parking ticket that led the police and the FBI to the safe house. And this was on 84th Street.

Parking Ticket Evidence And Disneyland Escape

So team Tico, Patty, and Yolanda decide to go to Disneyland to blend in with the tourist. And they're now on their fifth car, but they actually paid for this one. And when they check into a hotel in Anaheim, they turn on their TV, and oh my god, what they watched. Posted up at a house in Compton, Galena, Ms. Moon, Gabi, Fahiza, Kujo. Okay, so I've heard Kaja, Kaja. I'm just gonna go with Cujo. That was Willie Wolf.

Willie Wolf was the one that Patty actually had uh, well, it said that Patty had feelings for. They're surrounded. Now, after he had received that uh word that police were looking for them after what happened at Mills, Sin paid $100 for him and the group to hang out in this yellow stucco house at 1466 East 54th Street in LA. So when you start saying I was about to say, you know what happens when addresses come up. So here we go. Now, this was like a flop house as described in the book. People were in and out all day. Now, Sin, he couldn't find his plum wine that he he really liked, and he had been drinking Boons Farm all day. Boons Farm has made an appearance. That was the wine of our childhood. And anyone that came in and out of the house, he was just straight up telling them who they were, no longer hiding their identity. One woman, very concerned, flags down the LAPD who were always in this area and said, Hey, there's this drunk guy inside with a bunch of other people, and they got big ass guns and bombs, and they say they are the SLA. So they dispatched back up, and soon the house was surrounded by over a hundred members of the LAPD.

And then I believe it was Willie Wolf or Kudo. He fired first. And then for over an hour, the whole ass gun battle was broadcast on live TV. An estimated 9,000 rounds were fired. And 5,000 of those was from the

Live TV Shootout And The SLA Burns

I watched the footage. But they didn't. They all went together in the crawl space of the house and kept shooting. Now Fahiza, she had tried to run to the next house. And then Gabi came out behind her and she just started blasting. And a return fire hit her straight in between the eyes. Then Fahiza started blasting, and she got two bullets in her back. And then Galina dragged Gabby's or Gabi's body back into the crawl space where they all succumbed to their death by fire. Oh my god. Except Sin. He went out the way a cult leader goes out. Oh shot himself right in the temple.

For all she knew, the LAPD thought that she was in that house and they did not try to save her. And everyone died exactly how Sin said they would. And that's where we're gonna leave off for today because there is more to the story. My god, Lindsay!
