Ted Bundy doesn’t just “get worse” in the mid-70s. He speeds up, spreads out, and starts using the same tools and scripts again and again until someone finally catches a clear glimpse of what he’s carrying with him.

SPEAKER_05Well, first of all, hello, and welcome to the Drink About Something podcast, where Jesse and I uh have a couple of drinks. I tell him a true crime story, and at the end of the episode, he plugs a really cool up-and-coming band. And what's in your cup today?
SPEAKER_02Me, I'm drinking Cleveland. It is a bonded bourbon whiskey.

SPEAKER_05Well, I have a double grape white claw. Grape white claws are like a treat to me because they don't always have them. And so I got them last week for my birthday weekend, but so many of our friends gifted me white claws and trulys and shit. So I drink that.

So I'm going through the timelines and I'm listening to conversations and I'm just like, oh this is because technically, timeline-wise, this is my third week deep dive into audio. Yeah, and I got one more to go.
SPEAKER_02Damn near a month, actually, because you have been diving. And then, like, we still got another two weeks before we recap down at in Scaradice in Tampa. SPEAKER_05Okay, so um what was we watching? Hold on, give me just a second. Because I never write mine down. I'm actually never as prepared as Jesse. Oh, oh, we're watching Practical Magic 2 today, and the original came out almost 30 years ago. Like, I think uh it came out in '97. And we're almost in 2027. Shit! I know I'm so excited though. Yeah, I'm back, and I was like a teen. I mean, I was in my late teens at that point, wasn't I? 16 or 17. But that movie was just like, I mean, just it was planted in my soul, you know what I mean?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I mean, it's DNA. That is straight up DNA. Mine's more personal, by the way, Lindsay.

Bundy Timeline Recap And Roles
SPEAKER_05It's part two. Part two. Ted part two. All right. So last week we talked about Ted's childhood, his move to Washington State, and his first nine victims that we know about. Now, I told you about the fact that he worked at a crisis center, but also during this first crime spree, he had also worked as an assistant director to the Seattle Crime Prevention Advisory Crime Committee. God, that's a mouthful. So what he wanted to do, remember how we talked about like jurisdictions, they don't talk to each other. He wanted to learn about all those little inside.
SPEAKER_02How they communicate between and how they don't, yeah.
SPEAKER_05That's why I'm uh if you notice, like there's a lot of miles in between each one of his victims from except for the last two at Lake Sammamish. And what I did not mention is his last two victims that happened, well, in the in the western states or in Washington, uh, at Lake Sammamish, like he kept them there for days. And then made one watch the we don't know what pattern, which order, but he made one watch the other one die.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. He's just getting off on so fucking much of evil is inhumanity.
SPEAKER_05So this man had even written a pamphlet for women, for women, on how to prevent rape.
SPEAKER_00Ted wrote that. And he's like, he's like the upstanding guy that's you're on the phone with that.
SPEAKER_05Oh yeah, and I'm not even done. Like he did the crisis center. That was after, so this is after that, okay? And then he worked for that mouthful of shit that I just said, the Seattle Crime Prevention Advisory Crime Committee. You said it twice. And then he also worked for the Department of Emergency Services or DES, and this agency was heavily involved in the search of all these missing women, Ted's victims. And then he also dated a woman named Carol Ann Boone. And remember Carol, Carol Ann Boone, remember her, she's gonna stay with us for a little while. And he dated her during this time with DES, but he was still in a relationship with Liz. And he had also rekindled that relationship with Stephanie, where he ended it just because he could, because he was like, Oh, I'm gonna show you, I'm gonna better myself, then I'm gonna propose to you and make you think that I want to marry you, and then I'm gonna dump you.
SPEAKER_02And then by the way, he is also bringing home the dirty D to all of them because he's doing like absolutely filthy. It is completely oh my god to be that woman and surviving that.
SPEAKER_05Well, you know, during a lot of this book, like like Liz let a lot of red flags fly. And I just want to shake her because, and not because I'm mad at her, because I've been there. I've been the one that just let the red flags fly. And I just want to be like, Liz, wake the fuck up. Yeah, but you can't, when you're in it, you're it's you're blinded and you don't want to believe, you don't want to believe.
SPEAKER_02But your husband or your boyfriend or whatever comes up, your significant other comes home and has been doing necrophilia.
SPEAKER_05And he also burned a skull in her fucking fireplace. Yeah, yeah. And he's and we're gonna talk about it soon, but he's got shit all over her house and her car, like, yeah.
SPEAKER_00Oh, this is deep, dude.
SPEAKER_05Ah, so sick. Remember how I said in uh ep in part one that he, you know, Taylor Mountain was his dumping ground for a lot of the first victims. Well, skulls of these missing women would be discovered on Taylor Mountain by forestry students from the Green River Community College. Remember Green River in the future of season three?
SPEAKER_04Shit.
SPEAKER_05We're gonna revisit Green River. Coming back to Green River. Um, so these were students with the community college there, and uh, all of these victims would be identified through dental records because there was nothing left, you know, other than their skull bones.
SPEAKER_02That's what I feel like is gonna be happening here in Philadelphia.
SPEAKER_05That's why I brought that up because it's like but doesn't acid go through bones too? Damn. And I just I just want the so everything bad is gonna start really quick for for part two.

Salt Lake City Crime Spree Starts
SPEAKER_05boom. Okay, so Labor Day weekend of 1974. All right, he's he's he's done all the crimes in Washington. He's accepted his acceptance to law school in Salt Lake City. So he moves there, and of course, the crimes in Washington would just come to a complete stop where they had been literally like one a month, bam, bam, bam. Now he continues the relationship with Liz, and I think he does a little bit with Caroline Boone, too, but that's kind of iffy, okay? Now she, like I said in part one, she has called into the tip line, suspecting her own man because his name was Ted and he had a fucking VW. Yeah. But nothing had come of that yet because they had a lot of tips come in. Like everybody who had a boyfriend named Ted was calling, being like, hey, I don't know. And that is a phenomenon that happens, like when there's a tip line, women, whether they actually suspect them or not, are like, I'm dating this motherfucker named blah blah blah. Uh, here's his description because you never know any, I mean at all who you're really marrying to, you know what I mean? Or in a relationship with. I mean, this man is extra I mean okay, so he's going to school, he's got three different relationships, he's committing crime, he's traveling, he cannot sleep, he's not sleeping like at all, and that's what Liz will end up saying. Like, she he was out late at night and then he would nap during the day. Yeah. So nothing had come of it yet, uh, in as far as the investigation goes. So Liz kind of puts it out of her mind. But as we all know, looking back in hindsight, investigations take forever. Okay.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_05It's very rare when that things just happen bing, bang, boom. So now Ted is in Salt Lake City, and he gets hired as the night manager of one of the dorm houses, and he is also campus security.
SPEAKER_02So he's sticking everything into collegiate type areas.
SPEAKER_05I just want to say one thing. I don't get it because I have always known Ted as a fucking sicko murderer. But this man's good looks and charm gets him everything that he needs through women, through uh employment, period.
SPEAKER_00He's the gold member of my hemorrhoid. That's what he is. Gotta be. You know, we just danced around that earlier.
SPEAKER_05You didn't have to come right up. I'm just saying. So Ted would also date several other women when he was in Salt Lake City that he would never hurt because Ted, he'll say it later on, they could never be somebody that he knew. But kind of because one of the previous victims in episode one, the girl that was leaving the tavern, I don't have my other notes in front of me, but he had actually met her. Okay, so that day that that went down, he had met her prior to going with Liz to get her daughter baptized. So Ted meets that chick, goes with Liz to get her daughter baptized, then finds that chick later on leaving the tavern, and then so he kind of broke his little thing. That's the one that he said where they had consensual sex.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. In that one. That is the one. And then all of a sudden the hammer marks and the craziness on her skull is like that. Exactly. Oh, but we thought we had a he had a pattern, but I think his own.
SPEAKER_05It's gonna get off a little bit here. So here we go. All right, so then the next crime spree would begin in this area, and these he will not talk about until right before his execution. So on September 2nd, he's he just got there, okay? He just got fucking, he's not, he's on the way. He picked up an unidentified hitchhiker in Idaho. He raped her and strangled her and left her body in an undisclosed location, returned the next day to take pictures. That's another thing that I haven't talked about yet. He took Polaroids of all this shit. Yeah. And he dismembered her and threw her remains in the closest river.
SPEAKER_02You son of a bitch. I fucking hate this guy.
SPEAKER_05Oh my god, it's gonna get worse. So hold on tight. We're set, we're we're not in the kitchen today, you guys. We're in the living room for Jesse's comfort. So hold on to the couch.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I am hanging out. Grab a pillow. I have no plant. Grab a pillow.
SPEAKER_05Grab, hey, you got little Bucky. We'll take a picture of him. Get the little comfort. Yeah. We got a vampire Bucky from Bucky's gas station. Well, he ain't on the run yet.
SPEAKER_02But he's not on the run, but he's moving. He's moving. So he's so The Beetle is moving.
SPEAKER_05So now he's in Salt Lake City, okay? And October 2nd, he's still in night, we're still in 1974. Okay. He's already that's number 10. So now number 11. He finds Nancy Wilcox in Holiday, Utah, and she was just walking, minding her own business when he parked his car and forces her into an orchard at knife point. He goes up to her, grabs her, he takes her back to his apartment where he keeps her alive for 24 hours before taking her life.
SPEAKER_02Fucking hell, Lindsay.
SPEAKER_05He later tells investigators that he buried her near Capitol Reef National Park, but her remains have never been found. She was only 16 years old. Fuck. He's starting to get younger.
SPEAKER_02This onslaught right here, Lindsay. I can't fucking hang on to this wave.
SPEAKER_05I mean, we both agreed a long time ago that Ted would be number 100.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, but this is it's already too much. It's the Bucky Beaver, I'm because you didn't know.
SPEAKER_05I'm hanging on. You know about Ted, but you didn't know, did you?
SPEAKER_02No, I did not. No. Lindsay, I did not. And you're you're you're plugging in way more than any documentary, anything that I've ever seen. Ugh, this is not polished. And it's just you got like 900 900 more, right? You got 900.
SPEAKER_05Also, even for me, like even a lot of the podcasts that I've listened to in the past, it feels like that they just skated over this whole area, the Colorado, Idaho, Utah area, and went straight to Florida. But it's that this is a whole okay.
SPEAKER_02It's a whole ass fucking train of fucking Beetleberg, fucking Tedum Rotomary. I just I'm fucking hating it.
SPEAKER_00You know, it's got so much more to go before he even gets to our town. That's not that's not even this episode, yeah.
SPEAKER_05So on October 18th, he finds Melissa Ann Smith leaving a pizza place in Midvale. Melissa was only 17 years old and was the daughter of the Midvale police chief. Her nude body was found nine days later, raped, sodomized, and strangled by nylon stockings. And her autopsy suggests that she was alive for seven out of those nine days before her body was found, and you know he returns.

SPEAKER_05On Halloween night, so that's now three in one month. His cooling off periods are getting shorter in between.
SPEAKER_02This Ted is on fire.
SPEAKER_05Halloween night, he finds 17-year-old Laura Ann Ame hitchhiking after leaving a Halloween party in Lehigh, Utah. Her nude body was found by hikers on Thanksgiving Day in American Fort Canyon. Her autopsy showed that she didn't die until November 20th. He took her Halloween. Fuck. Now she had also been raped, sodomized, and strangled by nylon stockings. And just like in Washington, Ted was revisiting, defiling the corpses, washing their hair, and putting makeup on them.
SPEAKER_02Could not have been sleeping.
SPEAKER_05Could not have been, because this is still so you can Google the distance between it shows it in directions and trials. Make my mind go into like this uh frenzy. So I don't always write the details of uh how far apart these were, but he's traveling. He is traveling, okay?
Fake Cop Ruse And A Survivor
SPEAKER_05So on November 8th, Ted was hanging out at Fashion Place Mall in Murray, Utah. He's posing as a police officer looking for his next victim. Undercover police officer. He doesn't have like on a uniform, but it doesn't go quite as he planned. So he approaches 18-year-old Carol Duranche. Do you remember? Does that name ring a bell for you?
SPEAKER_02It does sound so familiar. Okay. That was in docs and stuff, yeah.
SPEAKER_05Carol, we're gonna fist up for her later, okay? So he he approaches Carol and says his name is Officer Roseland. He told her that he spotted someone trying to break into her car and tells her that she needs to come with him to the police station. Like, makes it like, come on, hurry, hurry, hurry.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah, yeah. You gotta do it right now, right now.
SPEAKER_05Now, Carol, she's real smart and she asked for ID. Well, Ted actually had a badge. Now he does flash it to her quickly. So, you know, like here you go. You know, the whole movie style type thing. I'm sure he learned that from. A fucking movie. She asked him why he isn't in a police car because he's in his fucking bug with the missing front seat. Yeah, the beat up bug. Mm-hmm. Yeah. And he says, Well, I'm undercover. So she's like, Okay. So she gets in the car with him and they start driving, but they're not going anywhere near the police station. And she starts freaking the fuck out. Trust your guts, okay? And then he attempts to handcuff her, but she's fighting for her life. And he accidentally puts both cuffs on the same hand and she gets away.
SPEAKER_02There you go.
SPEAKER_05That's why Carol DeMont. She got away. And she ran for her fucking life. Now I have ran from a dog chasing me, like a big ass Doberman. Me too. And that adrenaline was insane. But could you imagine running from someone who's trying to murder you?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, and you have the full realization that your life was on the line.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, everything flashes before you. Everything. I mean, my life flashed before my eyes running from a fucking dog. I couldn't imagine running from a crazed individual because if you later watch the documentary where he's yelling at that jury at the end, he snaps from like it's go he changes beautiful to like complete devia dark fucking the epitome of evil.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. That is that is that is why I'm joining this journey right here. Because he goes from this like smooth ass smooth Rico Suave motherfucker. Jive. And then all of a sudden this bitch snaps the fucking Satan himself.
SPEAKER_05And you know that that's what his victim saw.
SPEAKER_02The snap. Yeah. Because it's it's it's Suave, and then all of a sudden you get straight on pineapple hit.
SPEAKER_05When I seen that look change, I'll never forget it on that documentary. I don't remember the first one that I watched, but I was like, Yeah. Because at first he seems like this shit, this man that's got it all together.
SPEAKER_02He's talking intelligently, he's speaking, and then well, the shock the shock and awe was probably part of the whole ploy because he would work that whole thing up to you know females that he was trying to, you know, gather up and do his victims. He's treating them like they're and then snap, you're dead meat, deep six. Right on, dude. Like it is, and you it's shock and awe. They don't know what to fucking think.
SPEAKER_05I'm picturing his face in my head right now, and I'm just like, oh yeah. And I'm about- oh, and I'm also watching the two hour and 43 last documentary, also, along with everything else.
SPEAKER_02He would snap out of nowhere.
SPEAKER_05Manson was always looked crazy to me.
SPEAKER_02But he would he would be like, I'm straight on fucking telling you all this intelligent shit, then all of a sudden he's fucking googly-eyed fucking crazy. So it's just like insanity, just uh all on your fucking smorgasbord of what you have in front of you. And you you're like, dude, I don't want to be part of this. You know, I don't fucking uh these poor women. The charcuterie of fucking salad right here. I know. Yeah.
SPEAKER_05So Carol Durant, she got away, but Ted still needed his fix. So he went to Viewont High School in Bountiful and was pulling the same stunt and asking several students to help him identify a car as Officer Rosalind or Rosalind. And he was also like, they said he was being a little crazy, like he was pacing back and forth. But unfortunately, he was able to get Deborah Kent, who was 17 years old. She was there just picking up her kid brother from a play from the fucking theater.
SPEAKER_02Showing his full-on addiction. You know, he's pacing back and forth. He's got this whole ass fucking, he has to have it, you know.
SPEAKER_05Well, this time he left behind some evidence. The key to the handcuffs that he had tried to put on Carol, he left the key behind, and they they they collect that as evidence. And and Carol is helping them with this investigation, but Deborah is never seen again.
Colorado Abductions And Long Drives
SPEAKER_05So now we're in 1975. Ted starts hunting in Colorado. He's living in Salt Lake City. That is a drive. It is a drive. I did Google that. It's hundreds of miles. That's what I'm saying.
SPEAKER_02We need a Volkswagen Beetle. We can drive it forever.
SPEAKER_05On January 12th, 23-year-old Karen Eileen Campbell was a nursing student staying at the Wild Wind Inn in Snowmass Village. Now, this was in Aspen. And he got her walking down the hallway, a very well-lit hallway, just trying to get to the elevator. She was on vacation with her fiance and his kids. And what's crazy is I have to say this really quick all of his victims will have all had something crazy going on in their life where their guard is down. Like some of them had finals coming up. I know one of his victims from the first uh from the first part, their dad had just passed away. Um, this one, she was having problems with her fiance. That's why she was alone. She was in a hard time.
SPEAKER_02I don't think so.
SPEAKER_05I think it's just all fucking coincidence. And because, you know, most of the time, women in general, I don't know about this time period, but in our time period, we have our guard up. We're looking at surroundings because we know. But I mean, there was still, I mean, Ed Kemper was was was fucking around around this time. SPEAKER_00Uh yeah, because it even hit close to us. I mean, it's especially not on the fucking West Coast. God, I mean, it's either way. I mean, it didn't matter where you were. So it was a lot the West Coast. There was a lot in the West. So yeah, catching them off kilometers. And now we're in the Midwest.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Was just like that was his luck because I think he was just trying so many. Because you you were talking about that he was trying so many different people. Yeah. To get he was just fishing, you know, to get his fucking rocks off. So fucking horrific, Lindsay. Oh my God.
SPEAKER_05Karen's nude body was found a month later with blood force trauma to her head, deep cuts, and a split earlobe. On March 15th, 26-year-old Julie Lyle Cunningham was on her way to have dinner with a friend in Vail, and Ted used his crutches act. He asked her to help him carry his ski boots to his car. And she did. And as soon as she got to the car, he clubbed her and handcuffed her, then drove 90 miles to Rifle, where he raped and murdered her. He left her body and would drive back and forth from Salt Lake City to defile her corpse, which was a six-hour drive.
SPEAKER_02That's what I was saying. Like, dude's gotta be like just wide the fuck open to get his addiction, you know? He had to do it. He couldn't fucking get away from it.
SPEAKER_05And her body was never found. Like, I could fuck. No. On April 6th, Ted made his way to Grand Junction, which is the Utah-Colorado border, and 25-year-old Denise Lynn Olverson was heading to her parents' house on a bike because she had just gotten into an argument with her husband, and Ted abducted her. Her bike and sandals were later found, but Ted put her body, so he says, in the Colorado River. Like I said, every time there's something going on with these women.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. And the river itself is like a blender. It's just gonna fucking decimate every bit of evidence.
SPEAKER_00I mean, because nature, the water, yeah, everything. Oh, he found his little perfect spot now.
SPEAKER_05Fuck. Fuck you, Ted. On May 6th, this one's bad. Or they're all bad. But this one. Ted made his way to Posatello, Idaho, and stalked students at Almeida Junior High School and lured 12-year-old Lynette Don Culver to his car.
SPEAKER_02Lindsay, let's not. Let's not.
SPEAKER_05Fuck. He took her to a holiday inn where he raped her and drowned her in the bathtub. A child. I'm gonna cry. I mean, I'm just he was in so much credit card debt. And that's how they found a lot of their connections later on was all his credit card receipts.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, so that's where that's that's where I'm talking. I'm like credit card debt.
SPEAKER_05He is in like he's in debt that we don't even want to think about. Yeah. You know what I mean? That you can't crawl your way out.
SPEAKER_02This is the epitome of full-on horrific addiction.
SPEAKER_05Okay, so I just found out yesterday, side note, uh, more factoids that I just found out. Yeah, that when he went, remember when I said after him and Stephanie broke up, he dropped out of college, but he was still dating Liz. Liz paid for him to go back to school. So he's just like I said, his good looks and charm gets and I don't I don't get it personally.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, he's catch me if you can.
SPEAKER_05Like, people in that time period say, I mean, they describe him as a beautiful human being. I don't get it.
SPEAKER_02I didn't get it either. I don't like his nose. I don't like his nose.
SPEAKER_05I mean, but we only know him as a horrify, I mean, one of the most horrific human beings to ever walk the fucking earth. Right. But yeah.
SPEAKER_02I mean, this dude was just fucking up the whole nation. And he still got sick.
SPEAKER_05And so yeah, we're not even we're not even in the southeast yet. Oh. So he drowned her in the bathtub and then put her body in the snake river. Now, after this, he had a friend from or actually it was a few friends from the DES, his old job. They came and stayed with him. And then he, after they came and stayed with him and they left, they had a great time. He took him out, did the things, more more debt. Um, he went to go see Liz back in Washington. And like I said, she had already talked to the police now a few times at this point, but nothing had come of it. So they actually start discussing getting married, and they were gonna get married the following Christmas. That'll never happen. But Ted returns to Salt Lake City and then on June 28th, 15-year-old Susan Curtis vanished from Brigham Young University.

SPEAKER_05Later on in August of 75, Ted gets baptized in the Mormon church. I have been washed in the blood. But he didn't, he didn't like, he didn't like the way that they conducted their baptismal. No, their religion, period. Oh. So uh fuck this. Hold the fucking phone right now. Well, I was just saying he got baptized in a Mormon, but he never really practiced it.

SPEAKER_05In that world that I am trying to push onto Jesse, but he's not he's in that world as part of you're in this world as my telling goes, but yeah, it's a whole different life, it's different, yeah.

And I don't want to, and and you could literally do a whole season 50 fucking two weeks of just Ted, and that is so deep. Traffic Stop Reveals The Murder Kit
SPEAKER_05Well, not too long after he gets baptized into this Mormon church, right? He did that in early August, but on August 16th, he's out hunting in his beetle early in the morning, right? He pulls over, he's sparking up a joint, okay? Because that's what he likes. He's so I I I did mention this, I did mention this in the first episode, but he is always under the influence when he's that's a pothead and he's fucking he's an alcoholic and a pothead. So he's all the down frostfaded at all times.

SPEAKER_05Yeah. Ooh. So he's pulls over, he sparks up a joint, and he sees a patrol car, okay? And he's like, fuck. So he decides to just step on the gas and try to get away, okay? And this officer that's chasing him, his name is Bob Hayward, and he just happens to be a resident of that neighborhood that Ted was pretty much stalking for another victim. So he eventually pulls over, and Hayward's like, I kind of want to search his car because your name is Ted, and you're driving a fucking beetle, and there's been people missing where witnesses are describing this person, a person of this name and this in this car. Of this Carol Durant, who got away. She's working with the police, okay? So Hayward searches his car. And this car, of course, like I've I've said it a few times, the front seat is fucking missing. He puts it back and forth, but at this point, it's missing. And Hayward finds an entire fucking murder kit. The kit. So he finds a ski mask, a pantyhose mask, an ice pick, handcuffs, trash bags, rope, and a crowbar. And of course, Ted tries to explain all that away. He's like, oh, I was dumpster diving, blah blah blah blah. And Hayward's like, no, we're uh we're we're not gonna do that, sir. And Hayward is at first, he's like, maybe this is burglary tools because Ted was also a thief. Don't forget that. While he's also a murderous fucking sexual deviant, he's also a thief. Yeah, this Ted is on fire.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.

SPEAKER_05I mean, he I mean he's been doing that too.
SPEAKER_02Wide the fuck open. And I gotta say it, Lindsay.

SPEAKER_02I had to, I was pooping earlier in between us doing the things, and and I had to sing that. That's what I'm just saying.
SPEAKER_05So, like I said, you know, he calls it in. The car sounds a lot like what Carol had described. Ted sounds a lot like what Carol had described. So they arrest him and then they get a search warrant for his apartment. And in the par in the apartment, they found a map of ski resorts in Colorado with check marks in the areas where victims have been abducted and a brochure for a play at the school where Deborah Kent had last been seen.
SPEAKER_02So we're tying it fucking together here.
SPEAKER_05Shit. But it wasn't enough to hold him. What? It wasn't. Come on. So he's arrested, he's let go, he goes and stays with Liz, but he gets put on 24-hour surveillance. She will later say that when they would leave her house, the amount of undercover cops to follow them, like it felt like thunder road. Like, because so many engines were cranking up to follow them. They were trying really hard. They were doing the work.

SPEAKER_05But they had all these fucking roadblocks.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Between jurisdictions is the problem.
SPEAKER_05Well, they start working together. We're getting there. We're getting there. Okay, okay. Now, Liz, she does end up telling them that Ted has kept some weird shit within her house and and her car, um, like plaster of Paris used to make casts, crutches, surgical gloves, a meat cleaver, and a sack full of women's clothing.
SPEAKER_02How have you ever seen a more fucking murder kit than that?
SPEAKER_05But this is just shit like that. He's just like coming up with here and there. It's not like altogether the same thing. And I don't I don't know if this is still supposed to be used, but I'm gonna say what it was described as an oriental knife. And then she said that there was also something, I can't remember the exact item that he would keep under her seat. I want to say it was like a wrench or something like that, like something heavy that he could use.
SPEAKER_02Clock them upside down the head, the hammer marks or whatever they were throwing.
SPEAKER_05But he would tell her, Oh, this is for protection. Yeah. Liz also knew that he was flat broke, but he would come up with new stereos and new TVs. And I told the story in the previous episode about the Navajo rug, and he tells the whole story of stealing those items in the Bundy tapes, and it's wild. Like, I really I'm gonna plug all those books in part three that you just you have to listen to or read. The Bundy tape tapes.

SPEAKER_05So after his close encounter with the law, he decides to sell the Beatle. But somehow investigators found out. Immediately and they got the car. So he sold it to a teenager and they found the car and who he sold it to and they impounded it for further searching. Like they took it apart and stripped it completely, and they found some hairs matching the victims.

Multi-State Task Force And Conviction

SPEAKER_05So on October 2nd, they put Ted in a lineup and witnesses from the school where Deborah Kent went missing, and Carol Durant, the one who got away, they all pick him out as Officer Roseland. And he was arrested on kidnapping Carol. But his parents bail him out. Ted. And I I can't I understand. His parents just could not grasp. Nope. Ted had never had a record, Jesse. Okay. He had never been in trouble. Even for all the stealing. They didn't know about anything he had done. So you have to put that in your mind. In Ted's parents' mind. Okay. You know, his his his mother, who was raised as his sister, and his stepdad, in their mind, they're like, Ted's a great student. He's a great dude. He's been a Republican. They're not, they he doesn't have a record yesterday. He was making them proud. And do you know that that's also because, you know, Liz, his his psychologist professor, and Anne Rule had all called into the tip line, but he was at the bottom of the list because he did not have a prior record. Yeah. I just didn't know. Like I was thinking We know, but they didn't know.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, well, I was thinking they didn't know. I mean, I thought that, okay, I thought that they had signals and signs of the salad. Nothing. Nothing. Other than Ted being like shitty at his stepfather.
SPEAKER_05Other than that, I mean yeah, he was, but they just took that as oh, that's just a typical kid being shitty to. I mean, my kids have been shitty to you.
SPEAKER_02So yeah, I mean, but uh if you go back to the salad of part one of this, Ted just did not latch on to his stepfather. His stepfather did the military things and all the but take your teddy.
SPEAKER_05They just thought that he was just I mean, you have to understand that like all that was he didn't find out till till he was an adult that he was not Louisa's you know, yeah, but yeah, he there's so much salad there.
SPEAKER_02We could talk about that for another episode.
SPEAKER_05His mom and stepdad did not understand anything they knew nothing of this. You have to understand, you have to grasp that. So they bail him out, he moves in with Liz. Yeah, this is deep. He moves in with all right, so listen, he moves in with Liz, and he was still, again, watched thoroughly by unmarked cars. Now in November, investigators Robert Keppel from Washington, Jerry Thompson from Utah, and Michael Fisher from Colorado, they all get together and they exchange information with 30 other detectives and prosecutors from five different states, and they call this the Aspen Summit because they all got together in Aspen. But they still needed more evidence because Ted was clever as fuck, okay? But in February of 76, Ted was found guilty of kidnapping and assault on Carol Durant and was sentenced to 15 years in Utah State Prison. Just for that, just for that alone, okay? So this is where he plans his escape. In October of 76, they found his plans of escape. Like he's already doing it and he's writing it down. He's like, he's got maps and shit. They find all that. So he's transferred to another prison in Aspen in January of 77. And he also had an airline schedule, social security cards. He was ready. Okay.

And you are looking like because you know, we we've we've Silas is hanging out with his brother, and he's doing the whole thing with all the grandkids that we had all you know Friday night and all this stuff. Courthouse Window Escape In Aspen
SPEAKER_05June of 77, he's in the Pitkin County Courthouse for a preliminary hearing where he was going to be his own attorney. Y'all know this. This is famous. If you don't, listen closely. So he was allowed to be without handcuffs or leg restraints. He asked to go to the law library, and when the guards aren't looking, this motherfucker opens a window and jumps right out.
SPEAKER_02And free.
SPEAKER_05Now he is injured. His ankle is fucked, and he's limping around until he finds a hunting camp. Well, what was fucked up was a woman watched him jump out this fucking window and limp off, okay? And she goes inside and she's like, uh, y'all just got people jumping out your windows. And they're like, motherfucker. And they're and so they run upstairs to like investigate instead of running out to go find him. I mean, of course there's a manhunt, there's a bolo and all that shit, but like, you know how when the killers after you keep running more up, they needed to run out and find him. But they run upstairs like they couldn't believe it, you know what I mean? But yeah, he was gone. So he finds a hunting camp to like rest, heal his ankle a little bit. Now, after getting some food and a change of clothes and stealing a rifle, he heads towards crested butte. But he gets lost in the forest. And it took him a couple of days to get back on track. And then a few days later, he finds a car to steal. And he drives back towards Aspen, where he was spotted and arrested again back in jail. Okay. Now, this is Garfield County jail. But he plans another escape. So he gets another inmate to get him a saw. He found the floor plans to the jail. And over six months' time, he was able to collect $500 cash from pen pals and Liz, Caroline Boone, and Rule because they don't want to believe. You know what I'm saying? They cannot understand.
SPEAKER_02Sympathizing, sending money, yeah.
SPEAKER_05Like, I think out of all three of those, because Anne had been a police officer, she had suspected him the most, but that was still her best friend. You know what I mean? Who she's gonna later write a book about that I'm listening to right now. So anyway, he's collected $500. He lost 35 pounds to be able to fit through a one square foot hole and started exploring where it would take him.
SPEAKER_02A 12 by 12 hole.
SPEAKER_05On December 30th, when most of the staff was out on Christmas break, so it was a skeleton crew, you know, the skeleton crew, the third string team, they're in charge. He made his bed with books, so it looked like he was sleeping, and he made his escape. And what's crazy is the exit was the main jailer's bedroom. That's where that's where he landed. But main jailer was out for the night with his wife, so Ted put some of his clothes on and walked right out the fucking front door.
SPEAKER_02Just bald as fuck.
SPEAKER_05And Ted says in his taped interviews that it felt like everything was working in his favor to get him to the next point.
Second Escape And Flight To Florida
SPEAKER_05Fucking Ted on the run. Yeah, so Ted stole a car, but it broke down on Interstate 70. So he hitched a ride to Vale. He caught a bus to Denver and then boarded a flight to Chicago. He then hopped on a train to Ann Arbor, Michigan. He stayed there a couple of days, and all this time he's looking at maps of Florida, deciding what city he was gonna go to for a new start. He was gonna go legit. No more crimes, no more killing, and he was gonna do this under the alias Chris Hagan. Now he had thought about Gainesville first, but it wasn't close enough to water. He wanted to be near some water. And after a couple of days in Ann Arbor, he steals another car, heads to Atlanta, then took the bus from there to Tallahassee and arrived on January 8th, 1978.

SPEAKER_05Yeah, we did so we I knew that that show was upcoming because I actually do, even though I don't agree with the portrayal of the story, I do watch every single fucking series that he puts out. Uh, Ryan Murphy's monster series. So we re-released Lizzie Borden because we did stay in her house and we did cover her story in her house. In her bed. In her bedroom. Yeah. And it's crazy to me because I have read a lot of comments on, because you know, it's blowing up on the internet right now. And I've read a lot of comments about how people have experienced ghost activity there. I didn't experience a fucking thing. I slept like a baby. I had a great time in that house, and I will go back. We will go back.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, we're going back, but don't waste your money ghost hunting because I don't feel like there's any feel there. Just saying.
SPEAKER_05I don't know. I mean, everybody's experience could be different, but I didn't. The only thing that uh that house helped me do was uh I was I was I was ready to start and the next day it happened.
SPEAKER_02Okay. I mean, yeah. Yeah, and we had a great ass meal before that.
SPEAKER_05I mean, oh hey, the house is great, the beds are comfortable, it's a really cool, spooky vibe if you're into that, and the area is cool. There's a beautiful river. Even though the bridge terrified me, it's beautiful. Yeah, the porkage go next the Portuguese restaurant. Uh what was it called? Fall Fall River Grill.
SPEAKER_02To the coffee shop. Go next door and yeah, yes.
SPEAKER_05Go to the Fall River Grill and see and ask for Natalia, and then go to the coffee shop that's right beside the bed and breakfast. But I want to go back, I want to book the house and take all my friends.
